Lag caused by planet view / alleviated by galaxy view
« on: May 10, 2010, 01:09:14 am »
My friend and I play over the internet. Sometimes we get lag, a fairly consistent regular-lag-regular-lag pattern, start-stop-start-stop, and so on. What we noticed is that if he went to galaxy view, the lag sometimes lessened, or was removed. Does this point toward anything in particular as being the source of the lag? His computer should be capable hardware wise, unless the drivers are off. Cable internet.

This is not overly surprising, actually -- the galaxy map often uses much less gpu than the main view. So by switching it frees up extra cycles for the simulation, etc. In this case it just means that either the gpu or CPU has been unable to support either the rendering of what was being looked at or the simulation of what was happening, without some lag. In the unity version of the game that we are planning for august, the framerate will be decoupled from the simulation speed, which will help avoid lag in a case like this, instead just causing frame drops as needed.
