Autoupdater says file is missing
« on: July 29, 2011, 10:18:18 pm »
I have windows xp sp3 and yes it is completely up to date. Please if you know how to fix this tell me. The missing file is the updatelist.txt

This happened to me as well. What happens is the updater looks for a file at the location it mentions called updatelist.txt. What it is is a text file with the version number you're updating to. If you manually create it, that problem will be fixed but then it will look for a zip file which also does not exist. I fixed the problem by manually copying the files needed from another computer that had AI War, but if you don't have that option then I don't know what to do.

It seems like the files themselves aren't actually being downloaded at all, but I'm unsure how to fix it. Reinstalling AI War didn't help for me.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

Yeah reinstalling it didn't help it at all.

This thread seems to contain the solution to your problem: http://www.arcengames.com/forums/index.php/topic,7657.0.html

It sounds like you are running the AutoUpdater directly -- that doesn't really do anything.  What you need to do is run the updater from inside the game itself -- the game is what downloads the files, writes updatelist.txt, and runs the AutoUpdater program.  Hope that helps!

Not necessarily, when it happened to me, I had run it from the game. I just did what it said in the thread I linked and it worked. But it might be a different case here, if you are running it outside of the game then doing it from the game might work better.

The only reason it would do that from in the game is if it failed to make the download happen or found the directory to be unwritable.  It could be that shadow directory stuff that Vista introduced.  In that case, the thing to do is to make sure that your personal user account, as well as administrators in general, are granted full write permissions to the AI War game directory and all subdirectories.

But regardless, running it directly serves no function as all that tries to do is find updatelist.txt and then unzip whatever zip files are specified in that text file.  The updater itself downloads nothing and has no more sophisticated logic than that.
