electric shuttles starting game pwn and manage well can take planets out before mid game. the only thing you need to keep in mind you need to have the shuttles to be rebuilt or other ships waiting defending your base, after taking 3 planets from ai control thier about 1200 ships heading to ur planet + cpa or them yust sending waves to their ai planets to pwn u. well after this be wize to send you shuttles or scrap then yust rebuild at your home planet with tractor turrets and turtleing around near key wormhole exisits
AI War - even the smallest units can make all the difference no matter how weak they are still quite capable of taking the hits. if it can Kill and receive damage then it worth its time other wise if it cant kill and cant take the damage for the higher surviving ships then it is worthless.

Depends to some extent on whether my special pick is metal or crystal heavy.

I usually take at least tier II of my special and one (at least) of Raid Starship or Flagship.

Of the vanilla classes I'm most likely to tier II fighters and/or bombers.

I tend to use Scouting Starships rather than tier II scouts if I need deeper penetration than tier 1 scouts early.

If I'm in raid mode I'll take Tier II Raid Starships as well. Dreads are cheap to unlock so I sometimes pick them up too.

Tier 2 FF and MRS are pretty common picks too for me in support. Sometimes Exos (but I hate the micro).

On the turret side I like MLRS (II), Tractors (II)and Laser. Heavy Beam also if needed but that would have to be a v. tough start.

So in my current game I'm playing Parasites as my special.
My plan is to let them do the killing so I've just unlocked Tractor (II) turret and that's all in turrets.
Obviously MRS works brilliantly with them and their victims so I unlocked that next.
I did take the Paras to Tier 2 (but I haven't used them in such a long time I didn't realise that now they cost so much metal and energy and get such a high cap for Tier I you might not actually bother in their case).
Paras being so metal heavy you are really pushed towards the crystal heavy starships and as Para fleets often lack a bit of penetration/punch I went for Raid (I) and Dreads(I).

I also upgraded to FF(II) so I had somewhere nice and safe to park my command stations/research stations and MRS when I go thru wormholes. Besides I have plenty of crystal!

I'm just over an hour in and have 3 worlds and am about to assault my next one (with adv. research).

I think I'll take that and then have a good scout to see if I can locate some datacenters worth building Tier II Raid starships for and go on some deep penetration raids.

There is also a Core IV world 3 hops away from my home planet (so I'm not going in that direction yet for obvious reasons) but may start building some massed turret/mine defence on that side soon...

Beam Friggs mostly :)

That devastating laser of theirs + the advantage firing through shields is invaluable.

I usually pick my starting planet being a ship, any ship, that is very cheap to build like infiltrators or autocannons.

Then I usually fully unlock those ships, leaving me with enough for basic turret defenses which usually always includes a tychon stealth and laser turrets.
AI War - A good offense is a good defense.

Unless you have a very small map, the planet you are referring to is likely a regular IV world. The "Core" planets are those surrounding AI homeworlds (which are incidentally Mk IV), and possibly the AI homeworld itself, iirc.
