Waves attacking from map edge instead of gate

I have lots of gates that are enemy controlled and adjacent to me, yet I'm still getting ocasional attacks that come at me from a wonky angle. What are all the circumstances that can cause this? Its quite dangerous.

an ai type (warp jumper?) also does this exclusively I believe.

I think the Backdoor Hacker's exo-wormhole does this too.
