Using terrain to your advantage.
« on: February 16, 2010, 04:15:29 pm »
I'm posting this here because I don't feel like writing full AAR.
It's the beginning of my new campaign. 70 stars, lvl 6 AI. (yeah, I'm still a noob ) I started scouting and oh the luck - 2 hops from my homeworld is advances science station - this world becomes prime target. But is a lvl 3 star and got a truckload of perma-mines on the wormhole. How to get to the sweet prize ???
First - research transports, they'll get me trough the mines. 5 transports, one loaded with colony ship and some defenders for it. Other's with all the lousy lvl 1 ships I can afford. But if all my ships are on this planet - taking heavy loses from lvl 3 ships there my homeworld will be undefended and they may fail - against all the turrets , ships and mines. And my starships cant enter there because of mines.
Now here comes the terrain part.
Between this planet (C) and my home (A) stands another useless planet (B) - I destroyed warp gate there some time ago, not very much enemy ships BUT. right now a Devourer golem is rampaging there - he entered from one wormhole and is heading for planet C. He still has some way to go so I outrun him with my transports and enter planet C first. Heading straight for the comm station - my ships cant fight with lvl3 ships there, and AI has Flagship... I'm halfway to the comm station with some ai ships chasing me including the  flagship - first transport blow up. Unload all. Shoot the command station - it blows up. All ai ships are free now - heading for my defenceless home planet - 300 or 400. Entering wormhole to planet B - straight into the hungry jaws of the Devourer.
Checkmate.

At this time my 5-th transport unloaded the colony ship and its defenders. Victory is so very, very sweet.

I like this game because there is always different solution to problems. Not just build unit X at 2:34 minute mark then Y at 3:12 ... pre set path. Here you've always got different tools and its up to you to combine them. That was pretty lame example but I see other players use much clever tactics.

Lamerstein out.

P.S: thanks God for auto spell check, now I need grammar check :)

That sounds awesome. Can't wait for an opportunity like that to arise so I can give it a shot. :D

Also as far as I know Colony Ships have Mine Avoidance so you don't need Transports the ferry them over mines. Although I am a huge fan of using transports to move my "civilian" ships around so as to keep them out of trouble.
I love criticism! Think I'm wrong or something? Let me know!
