If you do the following, where your ships are the 0, you should stop using auto-kiting :D

I never found mself in this situation. I always take my fleet with transports on a side of the battlefield and start to attak. And if There is any problem with dispersing units, with a bit of easy micro I move those units in the right position. I really think autokiting works well. I put it always at "1".

Autokiting can cause problems when you're not watching, since units tend to drift all over the place and far away.

Oh, and when it comes to marauders on a planet with a gravity drill, you better switch AK off.

An autokiting armored golem can't shoot a fortress, also. It's already up on mantis. I think it has to do with the measurement for the auto kiting range using a different center for the model than the measurement for the weapon range, but that's an uneducated guess. Makes sense, though, for a big unit trying to shoot another big unit. It's the little bugs like that that cause me to keep turning it off. In general I do like it, but I always find something fiddly about it that gives me trouble.

I like the way it keeps units moving, making firefights less static. You see what's going on, rather than having to check the numbers all the time.
