Threat management.
« on: March 28, 2011, 03:10:50 pm »
Hello all, noob trying to make the transition to difficulty 8 here. I'm having an issue with defending my planets in the mid game, basically I've had two games now where it seems like my threat numbers keep growing too fast, and I'm overwhelmed by cross planet attacks, or basically incapable of moving my fleets out of their position for fear of the AI hitting me with a large fleet as soon as the ships start to leave the system.

I'm wondering is my problem that I'm taking systems that neighbor IV planets? Putting them on alert so they get reinforcements? Is the counter to this to simply not take planets that neighbor type IVs unless I'm willing to commit to taking those systems as well?

I've looked through the FAQ's but I'd appreciate any tips other players could provide.

Thanks!

Move your ships out, then move them right back in a few seconds later.

And once you have a Golem: Systematic Threat Sweep Operations.

until morale improves!

Also, if you have lightly defended border systems around your "real" defenses, they won't generally stalk those very long, they'll just attack.  And then you can bring the hammer down (or have an Automated Stalker Hammering System using redirection rally points and garrison settings).

and yeah, I usually avoid taking planets that border mark IV planets. It helps me a lot. I sometimes even feel resistant to take planets that border mark III planets, even though I often have no choice.
Neutering planets and / or clearing out the wormholes before you move your fleet away helps too. If you do want to take planets that border a mark IV planet, it might even be smart to kill all the wormhole guardposts when neutering it. That way it will only be able to reinforce at it's command station.

Sorry being a noob, how exactly does the redirection rally points and garrison settings work?
