SuperFortress advice
« on: October 31, 2009, 05:40:34 pm »
I just started new game against Diff 7 AI's - my first at this diff level actually.

First Adv Research I found has SuperFortress in system with it - any chances to take out this thing around start of game?

I don't have Z bombers this time (fortunately AI also).

Research and build a couple Raid Starships. I had a few on a planet with a fortress and the fortress lasted about 2 seconds.

But that was Fortress or SuperFortress?

I dealt with normal fortresses using 3 raid starships also.

Raid Starships are good, as are high-level bombers, against the superfortresses as well as the regular fortresses.  If you put your starting knowledge into one or the other (I usually go bombers), then that should clear it off for you, but at a pretty high cost.  Be prepared to send multiple waves against the superfortress, most likely, and also have other ships on hand to protect your bombers from anything else the AI might send to take them out (since the superfortress itself isn't much good against those bombers).

Also, you can use a strategy of misdirectng the superfortress around, if you have to, while you destroy the rest of the planet.  If you can survive long enough (leading the SF on a wild goose chase if possible), detroying the guard posts and then the command station of the planet will leave that superfortress without the support of any of the other AI ships, thus making it vastly easier to just whittle down with a bunch of bombers, which are hardly hurt by it at all.

Depending on the strength of the rest of the forces at the planet, taking out a superfortress early in the game is definitely possible, but it's costly and tricky.  I usually just try to go around those worlds unless there is something worth capturing on them (as is the case in your situation, unfortunately).

I opt for raid starships because i get

 * a fast force
 * one that takes out pretty much anything well
 * fires through forcefields

as opposed to bombers, where i have to haul around one or more other types of (slow) ships and work goes a lot slower.

Makes sense to me, especially if you repair those raid starships to keep their cost-to-benefit ratio in an ideal range.

Thanks for all methods. I actually abandoned that game - AI Diff 7 is kinda hard for me.

On my second try I was barely able to capture a planet and that was with quite a huge cost.

They seem to like force fields and bomber seems to be currently the most targeted unit around.
And I see that not buying raid ships can hurt.. something to remember for next time.

Cutting down the supply on a super fortress world seems a good idea to neutralize it, but it can be tricky if that world is surrounded by 3 or more worlds. Teleport Stations, Raptors and some other units are pretty good in that purpose.

Edit : Just checked, Super Fortresses doesn't require supply to function, damn.
