Starting with Multiple Homeworlds?
« on: January 24, 2012, 01:09:17 am »
Would anyone advise against or for starting the match with multiple homeworlds. I barely found out I can do this with the risk of the AI being much harder so I did a little test by selecting all the worlds that you can start with. You get a heavy resource boost, a lot of bonus ships, and science are racking up quickly from multiple science stations, plus a heavy energy boost. Well, usually I wouldn't want to have all that homeworlds, but I'm wondering if 2 is too much or best to pick just 1. Sometimes I just can't decide which bonus ships to take between 2 ships. Last time I played with my friend, I couldn't decide snipers or nanoswarm (kinda like those nanoswarms just setting it free roaming defense and spam them to enemy planets for harassing or snipers for sniping out my high value targets from far <special forces guard post, other guard posts, etc>), should I pick both next time?

My feeling is that, all else being equal, usually the multiple homeworld starts make the game easier rather than harder.  On lower to middling difficulties in particular.

But I really have to qualify THAT by saying that it dumps the work of 2 players onto you instead of one player.  You've got more territory to manage, more ships to manage, more resources to figure out what to do with, etc.  Quite frankly it is usually more than one person can handle at the default speeds on higher difficulties in particular, so you wind up needing to pause a lot to issue orders before the AI can react.

If you do that sort of pausing, then you have the power of two players at your disposal, but with the coordination of one single player at the helm.  In multiplayer the AI doesn't scale quite linearly in difficulty with the number of players, because multiple players are almost always less coordinated than one.  The difficulty scaling curve takes that into account, but with a multiple homeworld start that isn't the case -- not being coordinated with yourself isn't the problem, but not having enough time to manage all your fronts and economy and such in realtime IS.

So... my answer is that it really really depends on your playstyle.  In some ways multiple planet starts are harder, in others easier.  If you're always struggling with not enough resources, but otherwise are doing fine, then a multiple planet start might fit your style well.  If you tend to bottleneck so that the AI only has a few ways to attack you anyhow, then the other disadvantages of a multi planet start would start to fade quicker, too.

So it's really a personal preference sort of thing -- the game is different when you play with multiple homeworlds, and it just depends on what you find easier/harder and more or less fun.

2 HWs is basically just a more intense version of 1 HW.  Sometimes a lot more intense (exos getting double budget is no joke, if you have exos), but in roughly the same ballpark.

8 HWs is a fairly different game: punishing opposition, but with 8 caps of some things (like Riot Starship IIs, Raid Starships in general, etc) you can do some really crazy stuff that's normally not possible due to limited caps.

3-7 HWs is sort of a spectrum between the two.

I wouldn't suggest more than 2 HWs unless you're specifically looking for a very intense game.  If you just want a faster resource income you can give yourself a positive handicap.  Granted, the game doesn't give achievements then.

I'd mainly just want 1 or 2 bonus ships, that's why i was thinking about 2 HWs, I don't think I'll do multiple homeworlds unless I'm feeling suicidal :p. A lot of bonus ships but a lot to manage, 2 HWs should be fine?

I think you could manage it, but best way to see is to try. :)  If it's not going to work, you'll know that sooner than later in the game -- early in the game is when the challenge is stiffest from that, at least in my opinion.

Unless you're firing up exos, then all bets are off at over 8 AI level... :)
... and then we'll have cake.
