Slog fests, slog fests everywhere.
« on: November 13, 2012, 06:42:39 pm »
So started playing the game recently at the urging of a friend, set up a game between us vs an Assassin and a Turtle AI (which may have been my first mistake.) Things were fine for the first 9 hours or so, and then every planet turned into a cluster**** of lighting turrets and tractors. This isn't very hard to deal with, send in a bunch of raid ships; pop a few lighting turrets, pull them out, repair, repeat, but it takes forever and spending hours slogging it out with  one planet is just not entertaining.

Is there a better way to deal with the ridiculous turret piles where it won't take us days to accomplish the smallest things, or is the turtle AI just that annoying?

Welcome to the forums :)

An AI with turrets?  Can you tell me what version of the game you are playing?

Or do you mean lightning guardians?

1. Welcome to the forums.
2. Yep, that seems like a normal midgame fighting a turtle player. It sort of the nature of the counter to turtle strategies if they get a chance to set up. It's why I stopped playing against them.
Cloaker starships might be nifty if you want to skip a few planets, depening on how good you are at taking out AI tachyon emitters.
3. Turrets? What version are you playing on? At around 3.8 or so, the AI no longer uses turrets. The latest version is 6.006.

3.something.something vanilla since that's what he had installed himself. He's the sort of person who doesn't update stuff unless he feels there's a good reason too, and I've been unable to find a decent set of patch notes anywhere, so not found any non-expansion related reasons to prod him into upgrading.

Would inferring that guardians replaced turrets at some point, and that they're significantly less ridiculous then the turret spam insanity we're now dealing with be at least somewhat correct?

I think that there is a good reason to update from 3.0-6.0. It's almost a different game by this point; the lack of AI Turrets is only one difference. Mechanics, ship types/balance, and strategies will all be quite different.

I do think that guardians are more reasonable, but I was never around for the AI's days of using turrets.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

yeah update the game to at least 6.0. 6.0 is an official release and quite a good one too. Treat it like a whole new game though. Lots of things have changed since that time. Like a few years worth of daily/weekly patches.

Didn't expect to see that image come back up.

If one does want to stroll through the patchnotes, heres 4.022-5.0, 5.0-6.0, and After 6.0

Yea, the links Kieth gave are the abbreviated cumulutive release notes. Yes, disturbingly the actual release notes (in the links Aklyon gave) are longer still.

That's actually pretty skimable. Anything with the words "bug fix" can be ignored, and balance tweaks from several revisions away don't exactly mean much.

Took a look at the guardian stats (specifically the lighting one.) Beefier and hit a lot harder, but unless the AI likes to stack a half a dozen mark V ones at a single spot, the combined Hp and DPS  will be way lower. Right now there's dozens of mark IIIs per defensive point, so we get a shade to close and they just go *KERZAAP!* "Oh I'm sorry you didn't need that entire fleet did you?"  Add in all the missile and laser turrets backing them up, and even starships only last 30-40 seconds; less if you've yet to taunt out the 60 electric shuttles inevitably sitting there.

Harassing him into updating sounds like a plan. If nothing else the unpatched game isn't exactly a lot of fun right now. A day of play to maybe take one system (Assuming it doesn't decide to send a cross planet attack at the other end of our space, meaning we get to spend half an hour cleaning that up) is just... eck. For that matter the AI not having every turret ever should help with the lag of doom (For some reason an older system isn't every happy about rendering and simulating 6000 units and the all projectiles that implies :o).

Yea, unless you start really ticking off the AI, the AI will not get huge numbers of guardians on one planet. Helps keep the mid to late game moving a bit, instead of turning into "who can break the turret ball first?" wars.

Surely it should read "One does not simply scroll through AI Wars Patch Note"?
