Show off your Defences!
« on: March 02, 2011, 06:49:02 pm »
Simple topic. Take a screenie of whatever defensive bulwark of yours you're most proud of. Either your highly flexible patrol network, your interstellar intervention fleets, or, like my first contribution, your low-tec but high-power combined arms turret & minefield grids.

Post, Admire, Rate, Suggest, Whatever. I just want to show off.

See how neatly the tractor turrets are set apart from the minefields? How geometrically perfect the mines are arranged? How all turrets use exactly 2/5ths of their caps? How nothing is unlocks, and all is starting equipment? How aesthetically pleasing the sniper zigzag behind the forcefield blob is? How there's exactly 60 minefields per wormhole? How the mine screen is set up to finish off fleeing enemies? How all the fleet ships have been stowed away into transporters to better assess the performance of the stationary defences?

Yep, this setup is as good as they get before I need to dismantle them for frontline defences. Caps are b!tches.

That looks so cool. Nice, I just usually spit my tractor turrets in one 5 blob. As with the other turrets too, I don't think it's very efficient but I'm lazy.

I try to keep things apart (although you will notice most turrets are blobbed), so as to keep them safe from AOE attacks and to give melee ships a harder time. Also, having tractors over minefields saves the enemy from the mines.

Pure artistry, SK!  I'm only just dipping my toe into the AIW waters, and I'm not sure that I'd have the patience to lay my defenses out so nicely, but it gives me something to aspire to.

So if you have a ring of mines around a wormhole and tractorbeams covering that wormhole, he mines are rendered practically useless?

Very small rings - like a six-mine hexagon will still be fully useful, but anything bigger than that and the tractor beams will basically teleport all incoming enemies away from the outer rings due to colission avoidance. Very fast enemies might, and those with tractor immunity will, trigger outlying rings, but as soon as the tractor beams react, anything they can get their hands on is safe from mines.

It depends on what you are referring to.
The campaign-linked ships can be repaired.
The 'Spirecraft', according the tooltip, can not be repaired when playing it on the 'medium' setting, but can on the other 2 settings.

Edit: There are some exceptions to the 'Spirecraft' though, for instance the Martyr cant be repaired, at all.

What are those grey bars over your units heads, reloading meters? Do want!

Also how did you manage to change the planets names into something useful, the only method I was aware of was using the altplanetnames.txt in the game folder.

Other than that it seems like you have way too many snipers, I've had better luck using them in groups of 5 to handle small extras like space planes from border aggression.  The sheer amount of crystal that went into those turrets is mind-blowing.

Also where are the gravity turrets and heavy beam turrets? No love for those? :)

Reloading meters indeed, comrade. Turn them on in the settings menu, they're distributed freely to all, in a brotherly manner.

To change planet names, go into the galaxy view and use the "notes" tool on the planet, then just alter the name. You'll see how.

And no, snipers are good - for sniping. Ever since they were rebalanced, they've actually become very useful. You can, for example, use them to take out specific highly threatening units like munitions boosters, or those that are too fast or too cloaked for your fleet to catch up with them. And the more you have, the less time you have to spend watching them reload. And hey, what's 700.000 units of crystal...petty change, that's what.

Nope, GTs and HBTs are unlocks, and I hate spending knowledge. In fact, I tend to spend none at all, and to get by on ARSs and Fabricators, until my expansion can go no further without unlocks. Also, when I open pandoras box and start spending knowledge, I immediately turn to knowledge-raiding every planet I have supply to. EVERY ONE. Which takes hours, and which is less fun than actually attacking.
And when I do spend knowledge, it's usually on mkIII fleet ships, RC Starships, Forcefields, and various support ships.
