Shard Retrieval Methods
« on: August 08, 2011, 06:39:15 pm »
I started a new game recently and decided that i was going to do the Fallen Spire "campaign" on a 120 maze map, and take every single world. However the game I'm in decided to be mean and put a mark 4 worlds a few steps away from my front door. I've raided the gates on the ones i can see, however due to many failed attempts at recovering the shard i have taken up a new method of shard retrieval:

Raid all tachyon gaurds, and have a cloaker starship travel with the shard

I would like to know what type of tactics and/or strategies everyone else utilizes to acquire their shards

I always cover the shards with riot starships with double shields. Aside from snipers and other long range or shield immune attacks, it prevents a lot of damage, and the engine damage doesn't hurt either.

The shard is actually pretty beefy and can tank a lot of damage on the ride home. You can cover it with FFs if you want some extra oomph, but it's not really necessary in my experience. For my retrievals I would usually just escort it with a blob fleet of as many ships as I could spare. With so many targets, the AI usually only got the occasional pot shot through to the shard.

I used to cover it with a blob fleet, but on my current game it ended up dieing before leaving the system i was retrieving it from; my ships just could not compete with the 800+ tech 4 ships i was facing, thats why i switched to using cloaking. All i had to do after it got to my home system was use a lightning warhead on the huge amount of tractor and slowed enemy ships.

Technically now i can retrieve the shard from anywhere without losing ships as long as all enemy tachyon devices are destroyed

Just gotta build a ship grinder

Heh.  I suppose that would make it completely trivial, especially now that they're unlocked for free.  I never really had any problems doing it on 7/7 (other than losing the first one the very first time I tried to a severe underestimation of the journal entry's warning) just sending a medium blob along to blow up everything that came near it, without using golems or spirecraft or shields or anything fancy, but doing that would eliminate all risk.

If I do not take the planets leading to the shard (or from the shard to my HW, which is the same thing :) ), I do pretty much the same. I however do send in the fleet to cover them (cloakers & shard).
Not sure if the AI would have picked up but I've seen it happen too often that the AI rushes towards the location of the shard (which is on the move), uncloack the cloakers by getting close, than stomp them and still end up chasing the shard. So the fleet will be there to make sure the AI simply wont get close in the first place.

Do have to admit that I normally try to get the shard to my HW with 100% health, makes me feel all warm inside :D
