Returning to AI war, having a problem securing some planets
« on: November 10, 2010, 08:53:13 am »
It has been a long time since I played AI war and a lot has changed.  I am having a problem securing some planets from attack.  I have a few worlds bordering a group of worthless worlds I do not want to take.   On these border AI worlds I have destroyed the warp gates, AI Eyes, and some special forces guard posts.  I also have other planets elsewhere that do border AI worlds with working warp gates.

These out of the way planets I want to be safe keep getting attacked and I do not know why.  They can be safe for a while, but recently after a few hours a group of like 250 mark IV ships just 'appeared' (I am not exactly sure, I just noticed the warning that a command station was about to go down) in one of these supposedly safe worlds and began tearing things up.

Someone suggested the border aggression mechanic, but the border worlds had at most, 650 ships on them.   These border worlds are isolated in a pocket.  There are 4 AI worlds who have no connection to any other AI world other than these 4.

Why do I keep being attacked over and over?  How can I make these worlds truly safe without actually packing them with defenses.  The whole point for me is to remove the need to spend a bunch of my turrets protecting a border, yet now I can't seem to manage it.

What version of the game are you using?  At one point there was a bug where if you captured a planet the AI was still sending reinforcements to it even when it should not have been.  That was fixable by simply saving and loading the game, but the latest betas also don't have that issue.  It might be that is all you are seeing, or it might be that you're seeing counterattack waves from counterattack guard posts, which intentionally are able to strike anywhere into your territory -- but since you have the control over when those are set off, you can be ready for them and they should not be a random event.

Hope that helps -- and welcome back!

There are counter attack guard posts now that can send an attack wave to any planet not protected by a warp jammer com station.

You don't need a Save to tell that it's a Counterattack post/Revenge post

Those have wave warnings, they don't just appear.

I am playing the vanilla game, not the Zenith Remnant (I found too many changes and wanted to start with something more basic).  I am running the steam version, which ever version is that one.  As for the save, I could post it when I get home from work.   The attacks do not happen often, but they do happen.  So these revenge posts / counter attack posts are they part of the normal game and I can see them listed in the planet's list of enemy installations?

Yes. Yes, you can.

They're pretty evil looking structures at that!

You should fully neuter systems you don't want to take. This involves killing everything in the system except the command station & wormhole guard posts (you could try killing the wormhole guard posts but it'd take a long time & isn't generally worth wasting the time). When a system reinforces, the command station & every guard post gets reinforcements so the fewer guard posts left alive in the system, the fewer reinforcements the system will get. Once a system has been neutered I find it's easy to defend it's exit wormholes in my systems with a handful of turrets (I use one each of the mark I versions of tractor, lighting, laser & MRS).

You may also find it useful to leave a mark I scout in those systems so you can quickly see at a glance in the map how many ships are alive in those systems. That way when it gets beyond a certain level that you're comfortable with you may find it beneficial to send a small fleet to wipe the system clean of it's reinforcements. Otherwise you may find those reinforcements attacking you in the next CPA.

The current release version is v4.021. Unless you've updated from within the game to a beta release you should be on that version. The game tells you what version you're on in the top left corner of the title screen.

If this is genuinely happening without any alerts post a save so we can investigate whether it's a bug or normal behaviour.

Where are my saved games? I am using steam.  I found a save game directory, but the saves have the wrong date in them, they are not my current saves.

I did notice one planet has a warp counter attack guard post.  I am guessing this is the source of my troubles.

Ok, now I have a planet that is 2 hops from any enemy planet under attack.   They didn't even fly through friendly sectors, just appeared in the sector.  It was an announced attack, I knew it was coming, yet how was it done?

You could make a save with a unique name and then use the windows search to find it.

Under Steam the saves are in the RuntimeData/Save sub-folder of the  'ai war fleet command' directory, hope that helps :)

Ok, I have attached the save.  Planet Roseso is usually the one attacked.   In a little while from this save, Planet Pihluuo will have this mysterious attack, the announced one.  I was attacking planet Fohjer when the attack game against Pihluuo.  I do not know if that had anything to do with it.  The typical attacks against Roseso are not announced.

Well, that rules out any counterattack guardposts, because those waves are announced, but with a very short timer (in the rounds of 20-30 seconds I believe)
