Questions about Raid Engines.
« on: April 19, 2010, 04:23:24 pm »
In my time playing AI war i haven't seen many raid engines, so i haven't had a good chance to examine there behavior.

1. What exactly causes raid engines to go off? is it a large force on the current or adjacent planet or will an alerted planet cause the raid engine to start up? If I wipe out a neighbouring planet to a raid engine, will that cause it to start and keep going indefinitely?

2. Where do these raids appear? Do they come directly out of the raid engine or do they appear at a wormhole on the offending planet?

From what I encountered (and that hurt with munition booster):

1. They go off based on presence of your units. I'm not sure if there is any threshold for amount of units at which it starts.

2. Raid will appear at one of the wormholes and merrily come to greet your forces that triggered it.

Not quite correct. The Raid engine will go off if you alert the world it's on. Either by bringing a large enough (I think 100+) fleet or starships to any adjacent worlds, kill the command centre on an adjacent world or otherwise alert the AI on the Raid Engine planet.

The Raid Engine will spawn pretty tough waves at an adjacent wormhole, comprised of mixed shiptypes of the planets level. EVERY FOUR MINUTES! Try not to tick off a MKIV planet with a raid engine on it. Trust me, you'll regret it REALLY fast. Liberated a Dyson once in order to get some help. I kind missed that the adjacent MKIV had a raid engine. Suffice to say, not even the Dysons could handle the MKIV waves that kept pouring out of that planet. It ended with those waves killing off first my friend, then me.

Be WARY of high level raid engines. They can REALLY screw your day over if you're not careful.

on the other hand, if you have strong defences, parasites and leech starships they are a handy source of high level units ;D
