Knowledge is basically "mined" from a planet, rather than produced. If you think of it that way, the normal science labs can mine until 3000 has been mined, and then the planet runs out. The archive is capable of mining deeper and can keep going until the planet has had 9000 mined. If you don't build a science lab at all, you'll still get 9000 from an archive world (just takes a bit longer).

And yes, both archives on one world is rotten luck. :( Might even be a bug.

You're right, if I think of it like mining then it makes much more sense and doesn't feel as bad.  It did end up being the quickest I've ever gotten knowledge off a planet though.  Is that stuff seeded differently on each creation or if I do the same map gen # would it happen again? [Edit] Answered my own question.  I started up a new game on the same map and the Archives are on the same planet again so it seems not everything is randomly placed when you start the game. It was map #383282107 and I was using all expansions with 6/6 dual ai, starting planet was with the Scapegoats.[/Edit]

Also, I'm really enjoying the younglings as a change of pace.  Does anyone have a map they've been able to get mostly those types of units?  I'd like to try and play a game with mostly those as my bonus ships.

If you keep the same settings and the same map seed, you should get the same results IIRC. Now if you go and change something (like turning on golems), you won't get the same results because there's more stuff to seed.

Looks like some of it depends on your starting planet as well.  I can change a lot of the other settings and get the same 2 archives as long as I keep the scapegoat starting point.  Thanks for the help.

I've had 2 S archives on one planet before, it is actually a good thing as IIRC you get the knowledge twice as fast.

But you gain half as much. You get 6000 from one planet, instead of 6000 each from two planets.

That's because many things use an "X distance from player home" logic for seeding. The AI homes are a prime example of this, And the Archives are seeded based on those.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

i proceeded to go in advance and does an exam together with the Regen Golem along with the Railpods. I only acquired approximately Three because i did not have the manufacturer yet however when My spouse and i operated these upon they will required the actual golem from 100% as a result of 10% shutoff within Twenty five seconds.
