Knowledge Raids
« on: March 18, 2010, 08:09:44 pm »
ok so in my current game I'm doing pretty well on the offensive side but am lacking knowledge, so i think i need to do some k raids, what different tactics are you all using to raid for knowledge in systems your not gonna take?

i've been thinking id take a small group in to clear out the wormhole then setup a few counter snipers with a mobile builder before sending in a few research labs to get the k fast.

any reccomendations on what ships to send in?

basically any tips/ different techniques you got are welcome :)

tnx

One cool trick is to send in a transport, then send it way off to the middle of nowhere with a batch of science labs and some other ships (to fight off the starships, etc).  That tends to work pretty effectively.  Other players have been making excellent use of the cloaker starship to make knowledge raiding a snap.  The counter-snipers is the most traditional way to do it, and can also work well.

i hadnt really investigated the cloaker starship yet, sounds good, as does the transport technique, could i get away with the faster researching normal labs for either way?

also, i've been thinking i need to fit k raids into my general war plans so i'd like to have a mini fleet of labs on low power while not in use but there doesnt seem to be a pause button on them- am i missing something or is it not possible?

Especially if you bring along an engineer and some protecting ships, I have gotten along with bringing around 6ish of the mark I labs that are faster.  That lets me spend the least possible amount of time on the planet, basically only 2.7 minutes.  If you bring more mark I labs then you spend even less time there.  The less time you spend, the less time there is for pursuing starships to catch you, snipers to shoot you, etc.  Then you just load the transport back up and hightail it out of there, repair briefly if there is a need for that, and move on to the next planet, etc.

I think that Cloaker starships may be easier to manage with just a few labs, but honestly I prefer transport approach because it's so much easier to get past the initial wormhole defenses without having to do a bunch of fighting.

It's not possible to pause science labs, as you say -- there are plenty of ships that can't be paused.  But, you can put them inside a transport if you want, which means that they will then use no energy while inside it (though of course the transport uses a fair bit).

oh wow i didn't realise ships in transports didn't use power, i assume the same is true for ships inside forts...

sounds like a plan hahaha

Maybe this is a bug, but i cant seem to load science labs into transports - though i havent tried since the last patch.  Is this the case?

Hmm, in very old (pre 3.0) versions you could not load labs into transports. But you should be able to in any recent version, or that is a bug. Can you report that with details in the bug reports forum?

Something to keep in mind: advanced research stations can't be loaded into starships in the current version (at least not as of 3.0.8.7 beta). But in general, transports work well for knowledge raiding... though my group tends to just sit on the gate and use our fleet as a meatshield for 20-30 research stations, at least on the less heavily defended worlds.

Thanks for the tip about transports! :) I just got into the game again so I'll try that tip later when I get home... Seems like it'd work well if snipers don't rip me apart. Are mobile builders able to get in transports? And why aren't adv. research stations not able to be put in transports? Doesn't make much sense =x

Usually the minimum is 6 characters and I use 7 for my most used password. Just saying, cause I had to change my password to log in.)
