Hybrid Strategy
« on: June 19, 2012, 05:40:07 am »
Hello,

I've just started my first game with hybrids turned on (4 for both difficulty 8 AI players) and I'm not sure what strategy to pursue.
I'm currently two hours in and they are currently trying to defend AI planets I'll be attacking soon to get access to an ARS and striking at my rear production worlds.
At the moment I do not have any problems dispatching the attackers but the defending hybrids always retreat when I periodicaly clear the neighbouring systems.
I assume they do this to replenish their shield and supporting fleet.
There are currently about six of those support structures on several planets just behind the front lines and I'm wondering if I should:

A) destroy them, assuming the hybrids will then have to travel further out to repair.
B) guard them, use them to lure  weakened hybrids to this system and destroy them with a strike force as they come in.
C) Ignore them (if they are not important enough)

After a violent encounter with a large force of defending Hybrids an hour ago I now try to periodically clear any planets I can of hybrids to prevent them from building up.

My long term goal is to destroy the hybrids completely (or at least make them totally uneffective) before I assault the homeworlds.

I assume they do this to replenish their shield and supporting fleet.
They mature to the next stage after a while, so they go find equipment-module factories and drone factories of the appropriate new mark level to make use of their new abilities.

That will do that, yes.  They're not "repairing", per se, but yea.

At higher levels they may need to go way back to find a high-enough-mark factory anyway, though.

You know, I don't think I've ever heard that one before, but I think it would work to kill off new hybrids by clearing out most of the factories and "camping" the remaining ones.  I'm not sure how reliably you can guess which one they'll go to based on distance, though.  One thing to bear in mind that they don't have to get close to the factories, they just have to get onto the same planet.

Killing the support structures is worthwhile (except the construction-module ones unless you're playing on advanced such that the Dyson plot is possible), and killing the hybrid hive spawners on the mkIV+ worlds is very important for reducing the population over time.  If you kill all the hive spawners and all the hybrids, they're totally gone.

When fighting hybrids on offense, it's really important to just queue up direct attack orders on them.  Pause and shift-click your way through the lot of them, and they won't have time to get away.  Otherwise, your ships will spread their fire too much and drive them off, which is good for their survival but bad for culling the hybrids.  You could also try enabling the non-sniper focus fire control, which still spreads the damage out a bit, but only to two or three at a time.  A large enough fleet should still be able to finish off the hybrids like that, and it's much less micromanagement.
