How do you deal with Fallen Spire First Hub Attack's?
« on: December 26, 2010, 11:02:29 pm »
Just built the first hub, but we do not seem to have nearly enough firepower to repel their attack. I am open to taking more planets, knowledge raiding, and unlocking more ships (I'm considering dreadnoughts to kill their starships) but I thought I would post here and see if I can get some tips. Did we approach this event way to early? Because we seemed to fend off their previous attack readily...

Attached is a save so you can see our situation (about to build the hub, on the planet adjacent to my home, and my home had a fleet ready to move in if necessary). We both lost our home planets in their counterattack, but I made this save beforehand for this very reason.

After losing at this stage to core starships, I found that keeping a stockpile of spire rams on my homeworld worked wonders against their ships ...at which point I lost to a raid starship that just ignored the forcefield plug keeping the baying hoard at bay  ::)

I'll take a look at the save when I'm more awake, but in the meantime spire rams (with martyrs to handle the fleets if they cause problems too) are the way to go!

Ah, I forgot about using those asteroids. Thanks for that suggestion, I expect the rams to be very useful.

Alright, we are loading up on Spirecraft Rams, Siege Starships, orbital mass drivers, and gravity turrets to counter their starships.

I found that building the first hub required a lot of preparation. How many planets do you have been you make your attempt? I managed with five once but I had built nearly all of my turrets and had a Z Generator, and a few other specials. Killing the 5x Raid Starships was just murder though because they made a beeline for my home station but I'm mixing up memories now because in that game I still bordered a hostile system and had taken only one or two other planets. All of this was several versions ago so I don't know whats considered more normal.

I was pretty annoyed when they targeted my home command station even though my spire hub was no where near that. I'm not sure how to defend so many places at once...

edit: it appears that they just spawned in such a way that they went through both of our homeworlds, but if we hold those two worlds then they can't actually get to the hub planet (which is odd, I was expecting them to send warps from planets close to the hub).

Here is a save for those interested. I had good luck defending my home by myself, so once we get together i'll have my ally defend his and we should be good (i did a test run with him disabled).

Most of the AI battlegroups go after your homeworlds, rather than the hubs.  Also, since the hubs themselves are practically invincible, I find the best strategy is to use the hubs to defend your homeworld, especially if you can find decent chokepoints to place them at.  Research Mark III force fields ASAP, then focus on laser and heavy beam cannon tech.  I'm at the point now where I have three hubs (all sitting directly over wormholes) and any one of them can easily handle one of the battlegroups the AI is sending, without any outside support.

Orbital Mass Drivers are also a godsend.  If I know I am going the Fallen Spire route, the first time the Trader comes through I will find the resource node closest to my home command and put two OMDs there under a force field, which I'll slowly build as my economy allows.  Once I get the refugee outpost, I put it by that resource node for additional firepower, and then build about ten of each turret there (deleting the forcefield once everything is in place, of course).  Combined with the usual wormhole defenses, that will tend to deal with anything that gets through your outer systems.

Definitely the most important thing is to put the hub in a position where it's silly amount of firepower will be useful to you; my first Fallen Spire game I made the mistake of putting it on the edge of one of my systems (thinking to keep it safe) and it ended up with all this firepower it never got to use.  Now I never consider putting a hub anywhere except directly on top of a wormhole (or maybe on top of a command station or Adv Factory if it's a planet I really can't afford to lose).

Oh...so the hub won't die? Or its hard to kill? I would love to place it on the choke if I had assurance that it would not die (is it more vulnerable when being constructed?)

From what I remember hub itself is is now perma cloaked. So it should be invincible.

Oh...thats pretty sweet. To confirm...even while building? If so that will help out a lot in surviving the initial wave, since there are no points other than homeworlds to attack.

Here is a save of our next game (previous one did not go well...we were not set up to withstand their attacks).

It is NOT invincible while being built, however it does have a silly amount of hit points.  You will have to guard it somewhat until it gets 75% built or so, then it should be fine.  Once fully built it is basically invincible thanks to 100,000,000 hit points + permacloak.
