How do you deal with blockades of several K ships?
« on: January 26, 2012, 10:33:47 pm »
Approximately when I'm getting my 2nd/3rd shard, the AI sends fleet after fleet at a random border world. It(the AI) doesn't actually assault the world- it just waits at one of the nearby wormholes. At the start, it's just 2-3k ships which I can take out with an EMP+my main fleet. But then the fleets just become larger and larger until I have literally 8-9k+ ships(50-60% in carriers so nukes don't help) at my doorstep.

How do you deal with/avoid this problem?

Martyrs will help astronomically with clearing out buildup. To avoid situations like this I reccomend making occasional raids when you start to notice buildup. If a planet accumulates over ~500 ships then I go clear some out.

Of course, in your situation this will not work, since it is a shard intercept wave. Martyrs are your best bet if this happens, but a full on attack with golems or spire capital ships if you have them can help if you remove a good number of ships with martyrs. (Warheads will work as well if you don't have Spirecraft enabled but they increase AIP, so I only use them if martyrs are unavailable.
I can already tell this is going to be a roller coaster ride of disappointment.

8 martyrs took out what 1000 of my ships and a nuke couldn't. Thank you sir, I can't believe I've been fighting with sticks and stones while having access to this kind of firepower!

Conclusion:
(1) Use Martyrs.
(2) Use Martyrs sparingly to avoid getting addicted.

I typically do this.  I rarely play with spirecraft (asteroid based) on, so Martyrs aren't really an option to me.  One thing I'll do when this happens is pull a bait and regroup on the enemy.  I'll let them build at my defensive wormhole, and then pull my fleet back.  This usually gets them to engage.  Immediately reverse course and handle them in my own system, preferably with turret and booster supports (Anti armor and armor x3 from zenith traders, for example).

Another trick is return the favor, if you can't get them to commit, but you need to be on particular style maps to do this (like simple).  Loop the enemy and come into their system at a different wormhole, preferably with long range firepower (blade spawners, snipers, zenith bombards, zenith snipers, etc.)  Once the majority of their fleet is in range, retreat back through.

Rinse, repeat.
... and then we'll have cake.

This can work but does not always have to. I tried this at a dif 8 game once and as soon as I came in from another wormhole and started attacking the massive blob of ships, most of them entered the wormhole they were stalking and completely destroyed that system. So I savescummed and threw a few martyrs at it lol :D

Don't hit the system so hard that you scare the AI into retreating through the wormhole they're waiting for... :)
