How Does "Radar Jammer MKII" Work ???
« on: March 18, 2011, 12:51:51 pm »
Hi there

I have a question about the special building "Radar Jammer MKII" what you can build by the Zenith Trader.
The desciption says it halves the effective range of all enemy ships ...
What does this really means ???
Does it halfs the Attack Range of all ther weapons ???
I thought it should be work like this ... but often iam not sure that this works ... if iam compare the range of some ships with there range they really shoot so i think they shoot at ther old normal range ...
So what does Radar Jammer do or how it works ???

It works as you are expecting, and as far as I know is working fine.  Note that this only affects when the ships actually fire -- the shots are free to chase you as long as they want, as they are now.  If the enemy ship is within the smaller range while firing, then that's fine.

Note that I think the visual overlay ranges shown for the enemies are actually reduced by this, so they should be able to fire in that circle as normal.  But the circle is smaller.

I think that effective range is actually their base range + 3000 or something (base range is the range given in the stats in the tooltips). It is an odd and confusing mechanic that is a holdover from older versions where this was needed for some obscure reason. Keith has expressed interest in removing this mechanic at and have the tooltips report their actual ranges, after bumping up all non-zero ranges by 3000 of course, to keep things the same.

So basically, the Radar jammer does not half the reported range in the tool-tips, but halfs the effective range. This means that when a ship is under the influence of a Radar jammer (Mk. I or II), its new range is actually "base range"/2 + 1500.

Hope this explains it.
