Hardcore challenge
« on: January 19, 2011, 05:37:43 am »
Ok here is a challenge for you  :o

Play the game through your normal difficulty and settings you like. 80 Planets.

The twist is that you have to win in 8 hours. No more.
No saving/loading. You can never load a game because something went wrong. Can only save and load because your going to bed and coming back to the game. Done something stupid? Tough!

Let us know how far you get or what moment of idiocy got you killed   :D

8 hours RL or ingame time? 8 hours ingame with a rushing strat is pretty doable. However as I take 2 hours RL to play 1 hour ingame I wont be able to pull it of in 4 ingame hours.

I say it very much depends on the map, I quit games cause I got swamped with ARS/Fabs near my startinglocation. On those maps I could probably have finished in that time without compromising my playingstyle much. Normally I probably would not make it in that time, but than again if I am anything I am a turtler in games like these (though a bit of rushing can be a strong part of my turtle-strat).

The only game I've won so far (outside of the tutorial campaign) was 40 planets and 4 difficulty. Since that took me about 11 game hours I doubt this is the challenge for me. I've been trying to finish normal sized diff 7 campaigns, but various patch changes lately keep making me restart to get a new seed so I don't have things like Eyes on every other planet. Is there anyone in this game who has mastered every AI type and every difficulty with all the options so much that they need self-imposed challenges? If there's one thing that is already plentiful in AI War, it's challenges. :D

That's 8 hours in game time. If it takes you 80 hours in RL then so be it  :)

Better specify a game speed. 8 hours in blitz is one thing, 8 hours in epic is something else. Since I always play in the latter, I'm not even sure this would be possible for me.

You have a point, I was thinking normal with the 8 hours. Basically the time limit is there to force you to act and perhaps take risks.

Not having played the other 2 modes, i could take a guess at allowing 7 hours on blitz,  8 hours normal and 10 hours Epic?

No cake for me. My games tend to take several hours per planet...yes, I'm THAT kind of player  ;)

to be honest, i would'nt call this 'hardcore challenge', well, anything but time of course, because diff 7 isnt that hard to cope with and usually gives an eassy start. To achieve victory - your biggest concern would be locating AI homeworlds, and for that you need all scouts you can get at beginning... after you have direct/approximate location, just go for it...  Like i said... on diff 7 it isn't that hard, unless you run into heavily fortified planets, especialy early on...
About reloading - yes, i always tend not to, however that's inevitable when playing on higher difficulties (9 or so), because AI becomes significantly more threatening, and its not just about decisions you make, but also it's agrresion.   If you manage to survive first incoming waves and build some economy - prepare to face struggle for endurance (depends on AI type).
And like other ppl have mentioned - much depends on map and it's type... even simple one can become much harder or eassier depending of it's layout, for example couple planets in a row leading to dead end, where you can simply gather resources without a worry of it being attacked.
Then again... this game offers huge variety of gameplay suiting everyones own tastes - so dont be bothered and just have a game that you enjoy most  ;)
