Dyson Sphere
« on: December 09, 2010, 11:25:05 am »
Ok, i'm having some trouble understanding this Dyson Sphere thingy.

I parked a scout over this thing and then went about my business elsewhere for an hour. When i eventually bring a fleet to its planet there are around 20 Hostile gatlings at the planet which immediatly decide to annihilate my fleet. Just before that i managed to destroy the AI station.

Now the planet has around 15 hostile gatlings, 15 friendly ones and they just get shot at by the Ai guard posts.... I'm stumped - aren't they supposed to attack other planets? or at least defend themselves? Do i need a friendly planet next to the sphere for it to defend me? At the moment it just seems pretty lame and very much a no go area for the AI or me.

Guard Posts are never attacked by Dyson Gatlings, though I've often wished they would. Also, Hostile gatlings are meant to shot both AI and Player units, so no surprise there.

I agree its lame that your gatlings are apparently idling away rather than going anywhere, it's a bug that has been in the game before but I think it was fixed at some point. They might be waiting for a critical mass of gatlings before moving out, but I'm not a 100% on that. You don't need a friendly planet but be aware that they don't range very far from their home, 1-3 hops at most last time I knew for sure.

Hmm, i've never seen a friendly gatling move from the Dyson Home Planet. Now i've seen Hostile gatling guns go on a blaze of destruction through my worlds no problem.

Of course in most of my games i've never been able to go near the Dyson Home PLanet after i've visited it the first time because the Neutral gatling guns murder everything in sight. Maybe if i destroyed the last guard posts or something they would move?

Or maybe the friendly gatlings won't move away until the neutral gatlings are destroyed or have moved on.

My bad, I'm not sure why I blanked on that piece of information -- Ridding the system of the remaining AI guard posts will free the gatlings to move on to near by worlds. You may wish to deal with the hostile gatlings first if you think they will come your way though.

Well i made a rookie mistake  ::)

I didn't notice that the planet had a Black hole generator on it. No wonder they weren't moving to other planets.

Whoops. ;D

It was a one way doormaster. Suppose it doesn't have any logic to stop them spawning on a dyson planet.

I think this is the most up-to-date info:

What's new since 3.156:
(Cumulative release notes since 3.120 are here http://arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=AI_War_-_Current_Beta)

    * Dyson Gatlings are now immune to black hole machines. Removed the logic added in previous version that removes black hole machines from planets with a dyson sphere (as this could be disconcerting to the joker who builds one via Zenith Trader and sees it disappear when loading the game).
