Double Godlike on a 'typical' setup.

Okay, call me crazy, but I've been making (semi-)serious attempts at Double Godlike for some reason and I figured I'd start this up to see how you would go about it.

For the record, I say 'typical' setup in the thread title because I'm not trying to cheese this out in any fashion, but doing it straight up.

I'm also wondering if I'm missing something, most games I last less then 30 minutes.


The setup I'm using is a follows:

AI Difficulty 10 for both, Random All Non-Technologist
80 planet map, Realistic, Expansion Enabled
Complex Ships, all enabled except Astro Trains (they tick me off too easily)
All Minor Factions Enabled, No AI modifiers, 1 AIP per 30 mins.
No AI Plots

So far, my record is 2:55 game time with no systems captured, although I did have the command station down on the first system I was going to capture, I was not able to actually clean the system out and get a command station built. (Map seed 1002441406, I took the teleport stations. AI 1 was a Tag Teamer, AI 2 was a Tank.)

The strategy that (sort of) worked for me this game was to unlock Mk II & III teleport stations and Mk II MLRS turrets and spam build them around my command station, leaving the warp points undefended. This requires harvester exo-fields to avoid your harvesters getting destroyed.

This however put all my knowledge towards defense, leaving me to have to capture my next system with only Mk I units, which I ultimately wasn't able to do even if this was by far the game I stayed alive the longest. (My second best game I only stayed alive about 45 minutes as compared to 2hours 55minutes.)

Having tried about 15 games now, generally with a different strategy each game, I've tried most of the strategies I can think of.

Tractor + Turrets on the warp points, Fortresses, Mines, Ships only, different specialty ships, etc.

So, I now toss this out to you guys, what's your "super-defense" strategy you would use to survive at AI 10?

yeah, I figued

@ Dazio, I salute your heroism

try zenith mirrors, unlocking MKIII from start. MKIII Zenith mirrors will MASSACRE anything they can reflect for cost- fighters, bombers, most special types. I'm talking 900%+ kill ratio, and much better against gattlings, electric bombers and other glass cannon types. mix in a few counter units - bombers for frigates, fighters for melee types- and micro the counters to keep the mirrors alive.

might also want to consider unlocking missle turrets; while they lack the DPS of MRL, they have like 10x the resilience, making them much more useful in long battles of attrition. spam missle turrets, zenith mirrors and probably bombers (use the minerals & counter missle frigates)- if you can unlock flagships and get one built in time, they will make cost over and over again against mobiles (and last indefinately if you keep it microed). if you can, get a MRS w/ tugs and hide it under your base shield, tow damaged mirrors back for repairs for further cost increase. beam turrets also are very good at making cost, if you can keep them alive.

well you figured it wrong, and you fell for it HA :D never tried 10 . btw op you should just play as you regularly do, since you can win 15 matches, i suppose you have nothing to lose

@superking: Good thought on the mirrors, haven't tried them. Tried FF Bearers, Shield Boosters and so on, but not mirrors.

@rubikscube: Not sure what you mean, I've started 15 games on diff 10 now, at least 10 of those games the first wave killed me, I haven't even captured a second system in any of them.

I did just finish a diff 7.3 game that I found not really challenging, I'm really just toying with this before I start a diff 8 game "for real". I actually surprised myself by even being able to take an AI command station out, wasn't expecting to even get that far.

I'd also go with an MRS so that your mirrors survive longer...

well, i meant use your typical way  with everything and just be super careful, as i should say, use all exploits known the mankind and not to the ai to win.

just do everything super slow and micro everything cause i don't have any experience anyway

Wow, how did I miss these mirrors before? They are absolutely awesome on defense.

Well, except starships, leach starships are immune to both missiles and dark matter, learning that cost me a command station.

Anyways, with mirrors my games feel more controlled. Whether that is due to the mirrors or I've just been trying diff 10 long enough is up for debate.

Either way, I've almost reached 2 hours in my current game and I am about to go after a second system.

For reference, here is what I consider my home system "secure enough" to start going after another system.

Note the 860 ship wave incoming at ai progress 14, and that's average sized.

Perhaps the most critical unit, that can't be seen at that zoom level, are the gravitational turrets at the end of the 'arms' leading towards the wormholes. Tractor beams are pretty much worthless, I can't afford the knowledge for Mk III tractors, and trying to tractor an 800+ ship wave with Mk III tractors is hard, and impossible without them.

My most common command station death is from a wave of bombers, with the numbers that come kill my command station in 2 salvos, even under a force field. I'll be looking at a 99% intact defense of 100+ turrets still alive and a dead command station simply because I couldn't kill the bombers fast enough. Enter the gravitational turrets to buy me time to get the bombers down. This is also the reason for the turret 'arms', I have to give my turrets enough range to get several salvos in before the AI wave reaches my command station or I can't kill enough of them.

Anyways, my efforts continue, let's see how far I get this game.
