Dealing with waves of core bombers
« on: June 20, 2010, 12:12:41 pm »
Right, I got a good game going. I got about 12-15 systems sealed off with one entrance point, and that is heavily defended, and I got no problems holding it.

However, now that the game has been going on for a while I have discovered that the dyson golem was right next to both of level IV planets next to one of the home systems.

so its a square as follows:

V--IV
|....|
IV--D--other systems

I freed the dyson since it seemed like the decent thing to do, but right there and then I did not have the forces to take on those two heavily defended planets that has been reinforcing, so I retreated to find another ADR and a Mk IV factory.

To do this I got several system I have captured here and there through out the map, I have built some defences and it has held good so far.

Then I noticed the boxed in MK IV  planets are starting to send Core Bombers out now and again, I assume they are overflow ships (playing against a mad bomber), in waves of 40 to 100 units. This was ok to start with, but then I had a 2800 unit CPA that overrun my outlying systems, and now whenever i just get my systems rebuilt a bomber wave or two comes to visit and I gradually loose the systems.

The systems is not all that important, as I only keep them for some resources (my truly important systems like MK IV factory is well defended, but I would like some advice on how to best protect against Core Bombers with minimal effort and micro ;)

If you have the resourses, a huge battery of spider turrets would stop them from going anywhere.

also, riot starships, just don't put it right next to the wormhole, adjust to close to out of range of the bombers.

Yeah, that's another really solid way of doing it, for sure.

The riots are a good idea, guess I will need a second Mk level of them tho, as I got a few systems to defend with several warp entrances, and the bombers seem to come from different WHs all the time :P

Well, that is a good point, actually, heh.  That would be the most basic and quick counter for sure. :)

what , umad?

you would of gotten Fighter Marks better then II before the AI starts Sending Cores , so unless you don't care about your Three Basic ships , i don't get why you wouldn't get Fighter Mark IV before the Cores start pouring in

I got Mk III fighter, bomber, cruiser shiled booster, munition booster, that zenith cloaking bomber (look like wreck) thingy :D, and now Mk IV since I got my far away Mk IV factory. Lost half my fleet fighting for it and getting it :).

But the fighters are usually part of my main fleet, I can not afford to assing too many fighters to too many systems else I deplete my own fleet and reduce my capability to kill bombers in the enemy planets that has a lot more then small 100 wave core bombers :). My main defencive position is not bad off, it got a super fort and lots of nice things like radar Mk II jammer, shield inhibitor/booster, but I can not afford such niceties on my auxillary resource systems ;).

(My regular waves are Mk II AI ships, but these core bombers, while I refer to them as waves are groups of overflow ships form reinforcing second to home planet systems for teh AI)

if the planet that they are traveling on is empty then you can use lighting warheads then yust send them to intercept about 5 will do wonders then when they come detonate all remaing ones when they come out make sure all ships are away from the blast then thier should be cherry pickings if not build more :D
AI War - even the smallest units can make all the difference no matter how weak they are still quite capable of taking the hits. if it can Kill and receive damage then it worth its time other wise if it cant kill and cant take the damage for the higher surviving ships then it is worthless.

I rather not use missiles since the make my AIp go up ;) Also I can not be bothered to micro kill every small 100 unit wave every 5 minutes for the rest of the game, or until I kill home command :D
