Cross Planet Attacks

Do cross planet attacks come through warp gates, or can they appear on any planet at anytime regardless of the fact that I have destroyed all the warp gates adjacent to a given planet?

They do not come from warp gates. They are a bunch of existing ships from all over the galaxy being freed to attack you all at once. With luck they won't all end up coming from the same place though.

Great, thanks.  I take it this means that no Cross Planet attack ships will appear on planets that aren't adjacent to an AI planet?

Yep, they have to come from somewhere. The AI never cheats. True it can pull in forces from its magical infinite pool of ships that exists somewhere outside the galaxy (as it does for reinforcement or for warp gate attacks), but once they actually exist in the galaxy, they act like regular ships and they have to get around with wormholes just like everybody else.

I thought the waves spawned at an AI planet that wasn't adjecent to yours. However is gateraiding completetly pointless when cross planet attack?

In short: yes. A CPA isn't a wave at all.

To clarify: once every so often, the AI will decide on a number of its ships to free up from their normal duties to send to attack you. These ships must already exist in the galaxy - but anywhere in the galaxy. Hence Cross Planet Attack.
