Constraining range of FRD mode?
« on: July 17, 2012, 05:51:44 am »
Subject says it all: I am aware of the global option to constrain the pursuit range of units in FRD mode. However, is there any way to set this to a smaller value for individual groups? An example where this would help: in my current game I chose to deal with highly annoying small groups of Vampire Claws, which were left after conquering AI systems, by leaving a small group of Mk I Space Tanks at the new command stations. Unfortunately, if the Tanks are just sitting there, they will not start a concentrated attack on decloaking Vampire Claws without manual intervention. Setting them on FRD mode would do the job without requiring targeting micro-management, but then even a single AI ship popping up at a wormhole will cause the overzealous commanders to leave their guard duty, to be promptly exploited by the Vampire Claws waiting cloaked just outside the range of my Tachyon Emitters. It would be nice if one could reduce the defenders awareness and pursuit radius to keep them close to their station.

My apologies if this has been covered already elsewhere. And my thanks in advance for tips on alternative ways to deal with this tactical scenario. Building many turrets just to deal with a few stragglers seems to be a waste to me.

Have you tried attack move or whatever it's called in this game.. hold X and move your ships. They will have a yellow line around them.
set /A diff=10
if %diff%==max (
   set /A me=:)
) else (
   set /A me=SadPanda
)

If you've secured those worlds except for the cloaked units, you could also just do a sweep with scout starships or tachyon drones, both of which can find cloaked units, and get rid of them so you can move all your ships on.

As mentioned, use Attack-Move (X) for short-range FRD.  They'll move to engage but won't fly across the universe for it.
... and then we'll have cake.

Arrgh, of course. I was just too much focused on using attack mode for its attack purpose to realise that it also has a use on defence.

Thanks for pointing this out...
