Counter spy

I'm two hours into a 80-planet map against what seems to be a counter-spy (on non-expansion). Scouting ahead is therefore pretty much impossible, but there's no way I can neuter every planet just to see what's on the other side and there's no way I can play this game blind. Anyone got experience against these?

Scout starships become an excellent way to do the scouting, in those games.  I can't recall, but mark IV scouts may also be able to bypass them.  You can also send strike forces to just kill the counter-spy unit specifically, if there is only one or two of them, but if you are playing against a counter-spy type AI then they will be all over the place and you'll have a really hard time scouting in general, and will mainly need to rely on scout starships and careful positioning on the map to make it so that your scout starships have lower distances to travel (and thus can survive).

Ok, so I'm guessing scout starships are immune to being insta-killed, but can the turret decloak them? I'm guessing it can still hit them but if it cant decloak them then problem pretty much solved. A bit more micro but I can deal with that.

The scout starships aren't cloaked at all, but have scouting ability, which is why the counter-spies can't hit them.  They have a lot of health, but only so much, which is why they are only effective at going a few hops at a time.

Huh... They aren't cloaked... Ok I'll give it a go and get back to you. Thanks for the advice. I'm always amazed by how fast you answer these.  :)

Wait, what? Scout starships aren't cloaked? I distinctly remember them having a blue aura and not being shot once outside Tachyon range. Or did this recently change?

Just started up again, the scout starships are cloaked and the counterspy turret doesn't pay any attention to them. I guess you made a mistake x4000?

Oh, that's right. They have cloaking now, but they used to not. Can be hard to remember! :)

MkIV scouts are immune to counterspys. Found that out in a game a month or so ago.

Yeah, so the scout starships can get you by until you get an advanced factory, then just go straight for mark iv.

I just rarely use those units, and they've been rebalanced a lot. :p
