Cloaked Ships
« on: July 13, 2011, 12:19:41 am »
I'm in the middle of doing the tutorial, but it's telling me there are 129 cloaked ships on one of the planets I now control (the one with a data center and research facility) but I can't seem to find them with the tachyon drone, is there any other way of finding them?

I can't seem to take a screenshot in the game, it just turns completely black when I copy and paste it, is there an in-game way of taking one? I've seen a few screenshots of the game on this forum before.

You can use knowledge to research the decloaker, that has a pretty large sight radius.  move it around your system until it finds something. You should probably give it some sort of fighter escort.

Thanks, I found them all within a minute, it really does have a huge radius, especially compared to the drones.

There's nothing built into the game for doing it.  This thread, which may be a bit out of date, has various suggestions from people about what they use for screenshots.  I just use the Steam screenshot feature these days, but if you don't use Steam, obviously that's not an option, and you'd have to try one of those other things.  Not sure why the normal way of doing it isn't working, because it at least used to, unless something changed with that at some point.  I'll check if it's working for me later when I'm at my desktop if I remember.

Oh, shame, but it's not a real problem.

While I'm asking questions, I may as well ask 1 more, is there any way to set up way points? so rather then having your fleet move in a straight line you can order it to move to different places without having to first order it to the first, wait for it to arrive to the first, then order it to the second, and then the third, fourth, etc. I'm finding it very tedious when I want to flank AI guard posts or force fields to overall lower the amount of enemies in a system, while avoiding other guard posts/powered down ships, and it would've also helped me find those cloaked ships sooner if I could have set the tachyon drone different way points all over my planet, thus not needing to have wasted that small amount of knowledge on a decloaker with a larger radius.

hold shift while you give your orders (this works with move-attack, group move, and other commands, as long as your fingers can reach everything - I hope never to need shift-x-j).

On a related note, is it possible to order your ships to move in a loop (for patrolling, sometimes I don't like FRD)?  I vaguely remember hearing about some way to do it between planets using warp gates, but I don't remember the details to see if that can do what I want.

Just checked the screenshot thing with the print screen key, and my first attempt pulled the loading screen out of the buffer, and every try after that was just black like it is for you.  I wonder when/why that stopped working.

As far as way points and patrols and things like that, there are a couple options.  For one-time events, you can just hold the shift key to queue up movements, which works both on the system map and the galaxy map (e.g. you can send ships on a specific path through a single system or you can tell them to take a specific path through across the galaxy map jump by jump rather than the one automatically chosen by the pathing algorithm).

For stuff you're going to be doing repeatedly, you can build rally points.  There's one kind that just tells units to gather at it when they arrive in the system, and there's another that redirects them to whatever point you specify, including somewhere outside of the system, so you can set up some fairly fancy patrols if you want.

Sounds like what you're looking for with the decloaking is just holding shift and right-clicking a series of points to set up paths for your tachyon drones to follow, though.  Works pretty well, but their detection range is really small, so if you're really anal about finding every last ship, it can get kind of tedious relying on them.  They're most useful for stuff like parking them over a wormhole to catch the ships as they enter the system so your defenses can take them out, where you know they'll definitely pass within range of them.

Edit: And of course someone beats me to it because I get carried away going into far too much detail.  Heh.

Ah thanks, I wasn't aware of shift+right click, patrols don't make much sense since there's FRD mode (v+right-click) which will order your ships to automatically engage and destroy any enemy ships.

Two notes:

1. Actually, the screenshots thread is waaay out of date with regard to screenshots.  As of version 4.0 of the game, all you have to do is hit the F12 key and it will log a full-resolution png file right into your screenshots folder.  All of the discussion in that thread was back before we moved to the Unity 3D engine; I've put an updated note in there now.

2. The general notes on the tachyons, and tachyon drones are great here.  I would also add that Tachyon Warheads are an option, but probably not the best option in most cases.  The advice of the others is better, but if you're strapped for knowledge the tachyon warheads can be a nice thing to know about. :)

Along those lines, another "probably not the best option, but if you absolutely must find every last cloaked ship in your system" solution is the mk3 military command station, but that takes even more knowledge...

Another good freebie (unlocked from the start) is the Scout Starship. Has quite a decent range on the tachyon beam and is nice and fast. I tend to not have much use for them except in this very scenario.

but that covers the whole planet forever, completely nullifying the advantage the AI would get. By leaving at least one cap slot open for building and scrapping you can have a defensive tachyon warhead without the AI cost.

In fact, for games where the AI specializes in cloaked units, I put almost ALL of my command stations as military. In addition to the tachyon coverage, the stations themselves are tough enough that 20 stealth units, short of battleships, can't take out the MK I station, and as a result I don't have to worry / waste time with them. and if they try? Half will be destroyed meaning the next station which comes afterward will have less resistence (and that takes maybe a minute since my romaing MK III engineers built it fast next door).
Life is short. Have fun.
