Are special forces ever relevant?
« on: August 27, 2012, 03:21:13 pm »
I'm pretty sure the answer is no in the current game, but if I'm wrong I'd like to hear it.  They just come in too small quantities to make a difference, right?

Oh, they can build up to pretty good quantities by the mid game (try scouting a pretty well connected, pretty "central" planet in the mid game or later, you will see a surprising number of ships flying around). The problem is that for most games, they tend to gather in areas that are far removed from human presence, where they don't contribute much to anything. The explanation for why is a little hard to explain (it has to do with the randomness they pick their target waypoint planets, how eligible waypoint planets tends to shift away from human presence as humans gain more ground (though not due to any intentional logic, it is just a result of the AI planet layout changing due to less AI planets), and because for many map layouts, central, "well connected" worlds are often not interesting or important worlds)

I've peddled my ideas about making special forces a bit smarter plenty of places elsewhere, so I won't do it here.

I'm currently facing a Special Forces Captain and he's only had 2 effects on my game.

1) In the early game, like the 2 minute mark, I started having the Special Forces ships entering my system that spawned during map generation as "Special Forces" ships. By the 15 minute mark all of these were dead and I've never noticed the Special Forces Ships the rest of the game.

2) The +1 AIP for the Special Forces guard posts means when I'm neutering a system, I'm leaving those alive. That does mean the system is not really neutered but I'd rather deal with that then with the AIP increase.

Erg, I think that's a really long winded way of saying 'No' to them having an effect on the current game.

D.

@TechSY; yeah, I'm pretty sure I upvoted them on Mantis.  I want to say also that Keith has said somewhere special forces on one of his less urgent rework lists?   I hope so, anyway; they feel like they should be a much more interesting thing than they usually are.

Almost as if I posted it in response...
If warheads can't solve it, use more warheads.
