I'm tempted to try the turret strategy...
I've only been playing for a week but my current strategy is:
T2 Cruiser, Fighter, Bomber (unless there's bonus ship that really intrigues me in which case I'll use them instead of whichever base ship they're most like)
T2 Engineers (the fact that they teleport and you can move them around quickly from system to system is pretty huge)
One of the Starships (I haven't gotten a feel yet for which one feels the most "right" in my play style)
A couple cheap turrets (Lasers are really good for their price)
That's the first 12-15k (depending on what you buy)
Generally, I don't build Mark III ships until I get an advanced factory (I've yet to play a game yet where I couldn't get an advanced factory "quickly") and at that point I try to research as many Mark IIIs as I can...
In discussing the strategies though, it's probably helpful to know what type of game you're playing. I prefer epic games myself so I've been playing 120 systems, 1 AI advance per 30 minutes, AI 6 medium random, simple... Someone who plays 40 system complex, AI 7, fast and dangerous is going to have a very different strategy I imagine
My "Typical" game sees me deep raiding to hit the data centers and I try to keep the ai progression to under 100 until I get my first advanced factory... at that point, I usually make a beeline for one AI homeworld then pause and build up for the second homeworld...
