I'd recommend the IRC channel... it's fairly active right now.

IRC.rtsnet.org/aiwar
I use HydraIRC (http://www.hydrairc.com/index.php?page=downloads)

You can normally get a game started relatively quickly there... Good luck :)

It's well worth it man, well worth it :P.

Be sure to grab some sort of VOIP (I use Skype) client before asking to join a game though... I find it near impossible to communicate properly without using voice chat.

Unfortunately, I'm not gonna be on tomorrow, but maybe catch ya Friday? At some point in the future possibly :P.

If you want a game, I'd recommend chilling on the IRC channel. It's not always active, but there's normally at least one or two people who would enjoy a game with a partner.

It might be the AI type that you played against, some send more waves then others.

But as a general rule, ya, you'll want to defend your home planet heavily, and gate-raid (destroy the gate of the planet only, as to avoid irritating the AI too much), if not scorch (destroy everything), if not capture them (no matter what the planet has, to create a buffer around it) to avoid dying too quickly :P.

Good luck ridding the galaxy of the AI menance, comrade :-X

Might be a different AI personality... some are more offensive, others are more defensive.  It's definitely a good idea to get some defenses up pretty fast, though, as the AI tends to show up within 5-8 minutes on average.  There are some training videos here if you're interested.  They show one good early build path, including how to recover from some early mistakes.

Or if you prefer a less-harried early game while you're still learning, you could specifically choose some of the more defensive AI types.  The Turtles are the most defensive of all, and never attack you with waves (but have incredible defenses to compensate).  Or, there are some others that are more in between, like Fortress Baron and Entrenched Homeworlder.  You can also use AI Modifiers to have half as many waves if you want.  Or, depending, you may want a different difficulty level -- 7 can be vicious at times, so you may prefer to get started on 6.

At any rate, you should be able to tune it to your liking one way or another, so that it's pleasantly challenging without making you feel set upon constantly. :)

*yawn* it's late so I will play AI War some more tomorrow.

Doing better this time around.I built turrets first thing and I was able to hold off the opening AI excursions very well. What is the best size fleet for taking planets? The maps are so large and those shields are hard to take down, so I can't do any real damage while fleet gets blown to pieces. ;D

It really varies by what the enemy forces are like at the planet, but generally you'll want to have equal numbers if possible, or else around 1/4 of the enemy forces if you are going to divide and conquer the planet and do it in multiple waves.  Generally I raid with around 1,000 ships at a time, but sometimes as few as 300-400 or as many as 2,000 or more. If the planet is a higher mark than you, you'll need more ships, or if its lower than your ships, you'll have an easier time.  Bombers and Raid Starships are the key for the force fields to take those down more quickly and clear the way for your other stuff.

Well, I finally took my first planet. 8)

It was a tough battle.AI Progress is getting higher, and it shows.Occasional raids are now more constant, and I've held off 1 full-blown attack on my new planet.Very intense, and again, great job on the game.Looking forward to the expansion.
