Newbie here, looking for a game
« on: June 13, 2009, 03:47:45 pm »
I just got the game and am enjoying it a great deal, but I'd love to try the Co-Op aspect. Anyone interested?

Hi Zulgaines,

Welcome to the forum!  Glad to hear you are enjoying the game so well. :)

I'm the dev, actually, but just wanted to drop you a line to say welcome.  There are a variety of other players here looking for co-op last I heard (Bridger, Daemon, Arcane, or Panzeh) would seem to be your best bets at the moment, but there are others here.  The community is still small and it can be a challenge to find times when everyone is available (weekends seem to be the big hit), but there seem to be a growing number of people looking for pickup games (which I couldn't be more thrilled about).

You might also try here, since I know a lot of the RelicNews "dolts" were wanting to organize some co-op, and this is their thread for that:  http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?p=3543999

Thanks very much for your support and interest in the game!
Chris

Thanks. I noticed how active you are with the community, and I also saw you posting on sites I was reading about the game on. It's refreshing.

AI has always intrigued me in games for as long as I can remember, and I pretty much bought the game after reading your explanation of what you did with it here since it's so hard to find games that have decent AI anymore. I probably played Dawn of War a hundred times more using the impressive "AI skirmish mod" than I would have with the stock AI that shipped with it.

Thanks!  It's been really refreshing for me to have a community to talk about this stuff with and interact with.  As a one-man dev, even with 3 other alpha testers and a dozen beta testers, it's hard to get feedback from a large number of people like what I've been getting since the game's release.  The game is the better for it, I think, and I'm keenly aware of that.

I'm like you, a lot of times the mod-based AI in games is better.  I really liked Sorian's AI mod in SupCom, but it just got too slow (thirding the speed of the game in many cases) because he was limited to the threading model of SupCom itself.  And even though that AI was some of the best I had seen in an RTS game, it still ultimately became predictable -- of course, this was with versions from over a year ago now, so it may have evolved well beyond that since then.  He had a lot of intriguing ideas about intel gathering, etc, that he was working on at the time.  Very impressive stuff, especially given that he was getting his results using a traditional decision tree for the most part.

I originally started out wanting to do something along the lines of what he was doing, but then kind of backed into the approach I wound up actually using and was surprised to see how well it worked.  Once I started getting good results after just a few days of programming, I knew that was an approach I wanted to really explore more thoroughly.  I've got more articles planned for that AI series, and I had hoped to have one out this week in fact, but I just ran out of time.  Soon.  My hope is that maybe some other devs will also find my approaches to be useful, and will integrate that into other games.  There's some impressive AI in a lot of FPS games and some other genres, but I have been underwhelmed by the offerings in RTS.  Hence AI War. :)

Anyway, you got me going there, but thanks for stopping by and chatting!
Chris

I see him on there. I wonder why you're unable to. Strange.

Another Newbie here, bought the game yesterday. Didn't post then since I've been playing the game pretty much solidly since I got it >.>. Saw it on offer on Steam and as it has been said it was pretty much "OMFG MUST HAVE NAO". I was hooked in about 5 minutes. So my applause goes to the Dev.

Anyway, I'm also looking to try out the Co-Op side of the game. My Steam name is Knibbsy and I'm occasionally lurking in the IRC channel too.
