Evening/Weekends GMT long-ish game
« on: January 08, 2010, 02:37:35 am »
I’m looking for a long-ish game that’ll run over the weekends and evenings (GMT) to fit around university life.

I’ve a couple of small-ish games ongoing and I want to gauge interest in a larger map with more players. AI level would be at least 7.3 and I’d choose easy/medium level. 80 planets would be ideal, but if people would rather run through a smaller game first then that’s fine by me! We’d use whatever version is the most current and update as they come out.

I can play the game pretty well (as in I know what most of the buttons/ships do, and I understand that taking every planet is a bad idea) but I’m somewhat lacking in tactics/strategy so I’d probably follow the will of the group rather than start demanding we nuke every planet in sight! ;)

IRC/Steam groups are ok for organising quick games, but I’m looking for something a little longer. If you’re interested then after posting here either email/PM me or talk to me on steam. My Steam ID is Pineapple Sam.

Hopefully there’s someone out there who’s free at these times and wants to play!

EDIT: Oh, and I'd rather play direct-connect than fiddle around with an external application. I've successfully hosted before so that shouldn't be a problem.

This is something I am interested in - as a university-goer myself, it would be nice to have something to do on the weekends. I am based in US, east coast TZ myself, but thats not too far off GMT, especially on my otherwise mostly empty weekends.

Unfortunately, this weekend is bad for me (moving back to uni sometime, and .. major hard drive issues), but the subsequent times will be good.

send me a friend request and pester me incessantly when i get back on >.>

Searched for it, but I can't find it... can you please link me to your Steam ID page? It'd make adding you a LOT simpler!

I'm always having trouble adding Steamfriends via their name  ::)

Oh yeah... I'll join your game too if it didn't start already. As you can see I had the incredible awesome idea to include my timezone to my signature  ;D

I think I could also provide a TS server if necessary.

Steam page? .. let me see...

Yeah, I use non-standard characters to obscure unwanted invitations but that should have worked in search.  Never mind.  Here's the profile page...

I can play either Saturday or Sunday for 1.5 to 2 hours EST. Evenings would be best :D Thud13 on steam.

Hmm... just had a look at my new timetable, and weekday evenings are now out of the equation, other than Wednesdays. Weekends are still looking good though.

I threw together a quick timetable to compare timezones, and if anyone’s got particular times they can/can’t play over the weekend I’ll add them in!

I don't have any scheduled activities at the weekend.

It's just that Friday, I'm not available until the early evening, let's say 1800
No restricions on Saturday
Sunday I'm available 'til 2100. Got to go to sleep eeaaarly  :D

Maybe you can make a schedule table with each day seperate.

Oh... and in the table I want the colour red!!!  ;D

*shrug* other than this weekend, I'm available virtually any time I'm awake (and not in class, but those are only on weekdays)
Problem becomes, lately my sleep schedule is trending towards waking up in the afternoon sometime.. but my classes arent all there :|
Once I see what my first week of classes is like I could give a more accurate time really.. but until then, probably anything past 10am or so est is good

Sorry about that, I’ve been a little distracted… my course is a mish-mash of modules from the Mechanical and Electrical engineering department, and it’s very difficult for me to filter out the useful pieces of information.

…however, I found my timetable and was prepared for today, until it turns out one of the modules I was expecting to do has been replaced with something entirely different! Electrical circuits and machines is now C programming, and it clashes with other modules so now I’m trying to sort out when I’m meant to be where and get up to speed with coding.

Ah, the life of a student studying Robotics and Cybertronics at Heriot Watt… :(

Anyway, onto AI wars and a chance to take out my issues with AI on… well… AI!

After some head scratching here’s my final thoughts:

Monday/Tuesday/Friday/Saturday/Sunday: 1900 - 2400 GMT

We either do weekdays, weekends or both. Thud13 can’t seem to make Weekdays so I’ll leave it to you guys. We could possibly even have two games online at the same time… one with Thud and one without!

Either way I’ll be starting a game at 1900 GMT, 2000 CET, 1400 EST on Saturday evening and we can finalise times in the game!

Preliminary game options:
-80 planets
-Both AI 7.3
-One moderate/easy
-One moderate
-Fast and furious mode (I forget the option’s name)
-Complex ship types

Any options you want disabled/enabled? Astro-trains irritate me immensely, but I’ve a feeling they’re supposed to ;)

The times sound good to me :) - I am on EST like Thud13.

1400 EST Saturday? Should be able to make it for at least an hour to 2 hours (I start dinner cooking around 1530/1600 EST).

The options sound pretty good, I personally tend to disable Astro Trains - they may be intended to be a pain in the butt but it goes a little beyond that when they take out defenses with a wave incoming :/. What type of map were you thinking? Simple, Simple Hubs, Realistic, Realistic Hubs?

Also - what version of the game? Vanilla or pre-release? (I think everyone might be up to speed [at 2.6/3.0] with auto-updates version wise by Saturday, but you never know). I don't have the expansion and can't yet get it (discretionary funds are being redirected towards bills this month) - if everyone else will be playing expansion though then I will just bow out and wait for another game w/o expansion.
