COMODO network equal to hamachi unlimited people on 1 network
« on: November 16, 2009, 03:01:42 pm »
first of all the honor goes to seacow who found it and told us on irc i'm not taking honor from him i have just tested it a little further how it work with games.

i have set up a ai war network there for peoplewoh want to use comodo and i recommend it for everyone.

first of all with comodo like hamachi people connect to a virtual network here are some benefits.

1. A more stable connection the hamachi and everyone can use it without issues.
2. Less resource  demanding (can be used on a pc with less power).
3. Unlimited people on 1 network no more multi network everyone can play with everyone.
4. ingame LAN list works with it you can find open game ingame using the browser.
5. it's free.

Here are the channel info.

Channel name: Aiwarfleetcommand
Password: aiwar

you can download comodo from this link
http://www.comodo.com/home/internet-security/secure-messaging-vpn.php

Remember if you want you can turn of remote desktop in the option screen and i recommend that you can use comodo to remote controll computers to help other if you want

and again the honor goes to seacow it's not mine

Wow, this works a LOT better than Leaf networks, too.  Seems like this would be a winner for people wanting meet up and play AI War, especially if this can avoid some of the networking issues that very rarely struck AI War players using Hamachi.

Yep, another VPN -- not worth it at all in my opinion, it often drops the connection and was a huge problem in general.

For those concerned with such things, Comodo EasyVPN installs two Windows services that are set to Automatic:
- Comodo EasyVPN Service
- Comodo EasyVPN VNC Service (a rebranded version of the free open source software TightVNC)

If you set these services to 'Manual,' Comodo's product isn't quite smart enough to start and stop them on its own, so you'll have to do so manually, or leave them always running in Automatic mode.

For those not concerned with such things, ignore this post, you'll be fine.

Also, this VPN seems a little slapdash compared to Hamachi/Logmein. It already bunched up the first email I registered, and there is no way to recover a lost account without signing up separately for their forums.

And the mysterious Seacow has appeared.

I recommended checking the Options settings. It's pretty n00b friendly, so don't be scared.

So anyway, we now have Hamachi, EasyVPN, and now Tunngle. We will definitely have people split between different networks, sooner or later. This will eventually become a problem when the community get's bigger. IMHO, we should all merge into one VPN solution for now(or for u purists who will stick with just IP connecting) until Arcen Games make their own online solution (if I'm not mistaken).

The question is, which one?

Clearly the better choice is either Tungle or EasyVPN, as Hamachi has a limited number per group. With a few bugs to it attached. EasyVPN is also nice, but I get the feeling it's not supported much by Comodo. It also isn't that...gamer friendly. Tunngle looks pretty impressive. It's already been defined in many reviews as the "Hamachi for Gamers". The maker's of Tunngle are also regularly releasing updates for their program, showing that there is constant support for the program. There is also a small but active community making translations for the program and such, for it's still in beta. I find it to be the candidate as an appropriate solution long-term.

Although I did get a good 50 or so people into EasyVPN, I get the feeling it isn't "awesome in the pants" type of thing. So yeah...which egg do we pick from the batch? Hamachi, Tunngle, EasyVPN, wait for the developers or some alternative solution?

Honestly, the easiest solution is to just forward the one port that AI war uses, and host.  No need for added latency for VPN/Hamachi/Whatever else.  If you can't forward the port, get a new router, every one built in the last 5 years should have that capability.

Unless there is some other reason for using these services that isn't apparently obvious, I don't see the point.

It allows for a small modicum of 'privacy' in that you use the VPN IP address rather than your public IP address. Of course now AI War supports host names so people can use free dns services like no-ip.org or DynDns.org.

IP addresses shouldn't be considered private, nor should you rely on your IP address being private for security reasons.  Every time you open a web page, log into IRC, or send a packet, your IP address is revealed.(baring using some sort of proxy service)  Services like DYNDNS or no-ip.org only provide a mapping between a doman name and an ip address, they do not protect your IP address as an easy nslookup command can tell you the IP address that domain name is mapped to.

I know that, but try to get a normal internet user to get the concept.

As a side note: things like Comodo/Hamachi/etc are good for games that don't support internet play (direct IP or otherwise) and only have LAN play, the networks simulate a LAN allowing for people from all over to play a LAN game via WAN. This is really good for older titles that no longer have developer support (Heroes of Might and Magic III comes to mind as a game I own that benefits from VPN style setups).

What all you guys have said is true, however, people are generally just too lazy these days to go through all that kind of stuff just to play a game of AI War. They all may as well just sign up for a VPN, and theirs barely anything else to worry about, excluding security concerns.

Also, a VPN can be more secure, since they are connected to a central network, only the IP is given to that central network, and in EasyVPN's case, COMODO. The network then assign's a Virtual IP when they log into the network, hence the end-user will not know what their real IPs are.
