Title: AI War Hamachi networks
Post by: Zulgaines on June 14, 2009, 04:25:00 PM
I set up a public AI War Hamachi network for people looking to meet others and play Co-Op.

The Hamachi channel name is "AI War: Fleet Command", there should be no password.

You can download Hamachi here: https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/list.asp (https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/list.asp)

The program basically sets up a fake LAN network through the Internet. Meaning you can host and connect to others even if you're behind a firewall or router protection. You should theoretically be able to see games others are hosting in your LAN list as well, though I'm not 100% sure about that one. The program also has a chat feature to more easily set up games with other players.

Edit by Fiskbit: Courtesy of Gibon, there's now a second Hamachi network, for those interested: "AI War: Fleet Command 2"

Hey, thanks for setting this up -- Hamachi is great, I've used it plenty of times in the past with AI War and otherwise.  I've stickied this topic. :)

It will also work as a bit of a gathering point as well while we wait and hope for any Xfire of Gamespy support.

Hey All,

I've joined the hamachi group - "sukoto" is my alias there.

I'm still playing through the tutorials and the like - I find these games exciting but very intimidating!

We learn by doing.

Perhaps these forums can do with a "newcomers introduction" thread?

Hi Starmonkey,

The Official AI War: Fleet Command Wiki (http://www.arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=AI_War:Fleet_Command) should hopefully be able to answer some of your questions. It has certainly been useful for me.

If the wiki does leave any of your questions unaddressed please post them on the forum - everyone here is very amenable to helping, particularly the developer, x4000, who maintains the wiki.

Good luck in your campaigns against the AI!

I tried to join this evening but apparently the network is full.

For a public (free) network it is limited to 16 users.

Hello!

Same here. When I tried to join the "AI War: Fleet Command" hamachi returned the message that network is full. I am setting another network - "AI War: Fleet Command 2" pass: "net2" ( NO "" ), for those who can't join the first one.

No password required.

Hi, just got the game and registered here. Just finished the tutorials and want to play online via hamachi.

But both networks are FULL:
AI War: Fleet Command
AI War: Fleet Command 2

I also tried
AI War: Fleet Command 3

but it doesnt exist^^

it seems like this game only works via LAN or things like hamachi, or did I miss something and there are other means?

It works via direct connect, as well, like with most other online games.  The only thing that is missing here that is in a number of other games is a matchmaking server; we never had the capacity for that in the past, and given the extended nature of games it was less of a priority than the other features, etc.  The best suggestion is to post your availability in this forum, or look on the IRC channel to see if anyone is up for a game right now, and then go from there.  Hope that helps!

Hey. Just got the game. Its very hard to learn. But that what makes it fun. I got Hamachi. Does anyone have any other rooms up that we can join to play on it? I'm only available on the weekends and fridays to play it. Thanks.

I've started up AI War: Fleet Command 3.  I was tired of never being able to join the first two.

No password yet again, so come on in.  I'd also like to play a game sometime between now and noon tomorrow. :D

Ha, that one is full now too. Are people just camping in all three at once?
Title: Re: AI War Hamachi networks

With Hamachi, when you join a network it leaves you in there permanently, and each one only has 16 slots.  So I think this is a pretty nonworkable way to organize lots of people, as it turns out -- my suggestion of Hamachi was originally for small groups of regulars to join together.  I think that the Steam Communities, or the IRC channels (or posting on this forum) are generally going to be the better way to meet and coordinate schedules with people who want to play at similar times together...

Ah, so it doesn't matter if they're online or off, it's going to get full quick.

Not the best way to 'matchmake' then.
Title: Re: AI War Hamachi networks
Post by: x4000 on October 24, 2009, 08:25:56 PM
No, absolutely -- I had never intended for Hamachi to be used for matchmaking per se.  You're absolutely right.
Title: Re: AI War Hamachi networks
Post by: StealthArcher on October 24, 2009, 11:22:58 PM
I've started channels 4 & 5 now too.

I'm on often enough, If you are willing to play a game, pm me and I can get you into a separate Channel, which I'll setup for ongoing games. We'll just let you stay there until there's enough to play a game, and off you go.

Be aware though, once you're game is done, you will be evicted, so the network doesn't clog up.

Yes, all that helped me. I'll try it soon, thanks.

Kicking offline players off the hamachi network sounds good, could make it useful for matchmaking. there only needs to be one guy who cleans up all the day^^ But I agree that IRC and this board would be the best ways to team up.

Arr, I be a dumbass.  I bought windows 7 today (hooray for student 40$ deals), and did a clean install.  Problem being, Hamachi still recognizes that Vista installation as the admin of networks 3-5.  So as of today, they're unmoderated.  I might open up 6 or 7 as 5 fills.

After having problems finding a game i've decided to create a network for a specific timezone.

The network I made is for CET/GMT timezones.

Networkname: "AI War:CET1"

There is no password or join request.
Let me know if there are any problems.

Note that Hamachi is in no way a "part" of AI War itself.  It's simply something that players are accustomed to using for their own personal purposes for a wide variety of games (Age of Empires III, to my recollection, was unplayable over direct connect with any other method).  Given the familiarity of these, many companies recommend using Hamachi or another personal VPN client (I personally use Leaf Networks at the moment), for when players have trouble configuring their port forwarding.

I understand but I was just giving them a link so they stop complaining that each room is full. ;D

Hello,
I wonder if it will be beneficial to have a Hamachi network of 256 slots?
Currently, with only 16 slots and the number of persons not connected... It is not easy to find players :(

I could create channels of 256 slots but would know if it would be really useful? :)

Thank you.

since you asked...

My opinion is this:
Its great to have a ton of random people on a hamachi server.
Except.
None of them talk to each other. Guys a, b, e, f, y, and z can all be playing AI war, and might even want to play a multiplayer game together. Unfortunately, short of chatting to every single other guy on the list 'hey wanna play?' even ctrl v'ing it to everyone might take a  while.

no, hamachi is not the answer.

What we require, and I've probably mentioned it somewhere else, is a unified chat server that /anyone/ playing AI war has access to. While your game is open, your connected to the chat (naturally, on/off buttons, ignore buttons, yada yada.) There needs to be a way so that people playing games can talk to each other. IRC is great and all, but still requires people to have another program open just to run IRC..
From how I understand it, IRC shouldnt be that hard to put into a game, so.. Make an IRC channel of some sort (hell, use the rtsnet one) and put an irc-ish client into AI war.

</mini rant>

Hamachi details for our network, in case any of the others get full. I plan on keeping it trimmed at 15 users so there's always a spot open, if there isn't, post here or message me.

When I first started playing, my friend and I tried to use Hamachi, and AI War didn't recognize the network interface.  Is there a way to change the interface that AI War uses so that we can make it work?  It seems to be working fine for the rest of you, but I have no idea how you did it.  It seems like it would be a better solution then direct connect.
Title: Re: AI War Hamachi networks
Post by: x4000 on July 07, 2010, 10:32:34 PM
It should work fine without any changes, if it's not recognizing that it's probably something else interfering or Hamachi itself having an issue.  Or a newer version of Hamachi being an issue, depending.  But generally no changes are needed whatsoever to make this work, anyway.

A request for help! I'm at the stage where my friend has a hamachi server opened, and I've joined it (so we can chat using the hamachi chat thingy), but we're not sure how I can then join his game.

I can host games using direct-connect just fine, but he can't, and we're hoping that hamachi had the answer...

Can anyone post a step-by-step for hosting a game using hamachi?

As for matchmaking or utility, why not using Comodo Unite (http://www.comodo.com/home/email-security/vpn-access.php) which is free for personal/gaming job , not limited to 5 connexions and do almost the same job ?

Since Hamachi is not free to everyone anymore and the network does not seem to be continued (also a huge time has passed since the last post) I suggest to unpin this thread.
It does confuse new people (like me) in thinking that there might be still an open network.

Are you sure its not free? I was able to start it up just fine, never paid for it before, and I was able to get to the download page (https://secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/download.aspx) without paying either. According to wikipedia, the only thing missing for free people (aside from when they shrunk the free room size quite awhile ago) is 'Running in the background of idle computers', and if I'm using hamachi for something my computer isn't idle.

I'm not sure how thats relevant, sorry. I'm still able to make (5 person, not 32-person like on the site) networks for free via the client I have on here, and a 5-person AI War game is a pretty complicated one already.

That's, however, german so you have to find yourself a translation.
there it states clearly, the free service is not aviable anymore. To use the software int he future you have to get a subscription. I don't know how you manage a free network or if you have only to get a subscription to create a network but not to get access to a network, however the Hamachi site itself states that their service is since January not free anymore and you have to pay for it.
And I don't want to scare you but you might do something very illigel right now or pay for it without knowing it (which however is very unlikely).

The site furthermore states that they suspended the free services for some reason to get a better experience for premium users.

All I'm seeing is that LogMeIn free is no longer available (as said here (http://help.logmein.com/SelfServiceKnowledgeRenderer?type=FAQ&id=kA0a0000000shH8CAI), is this the same faq as your german one?).

LogMeIn free is not Hamachi. It is a different service by the same company, apparently one for remote access of computers.
