I happen to like that the Dyson can soak some planetary reinforcements off my main lines until I get to it.  I'm not sure I personally want that changed.

Working on the reinforcements logging I did see that the dyson sphere is actually alerting on the AI-thread, just not on the main-thread, so I can probably fix that, yea.  But it'll probably not be in a release until sometime next week :)

Is that why in this case, the AI acts like its alerted, but it doesn't report as such in the galaxy overview screen?

ah allright, well I can wait till next week :P I still might need to restart though, I'm afraid I'm already to late. Over 9 hours of continuously reinforcing without me to neuter it has caused those 9 planets to build up massive forces. But we'll see how far I can get after it's fixed :P
For now I'll just continue with any of my 5 other games, I really want to get my first dif 9 achiev.

and well GUDare, if it's unintended behavior I'm afraid he's gonna fix it anyways :P If it's not, perhaps make it optional? :P
If you've never played a 9/9 crosshatch game before, try it ^^ You're probably going to hate the dyson alerting worlds as much as I do.

Oh, I plan to.  I just have a few games queued up right now.  1) finish the 9 through 10 run 2) Disposable Heroes 3) 9/9 Crosshatch. :)

Maybe I'll combine 2 and 3... :)

I've ran into heavily reinforced Dysons in late game though, 6+ planets and the like.  I realized WHY I was able to move so easily through the systems though.  Since I'd only had 5-6 planets the Dyson and I were splitting the reinforcements.  My solution was to simply suicide pop the tachyons on one way in, get a scout on the planet, and let the dyson go to work for a while without my help.  It couldn't save itself no, but it did some decent whittling.
... and then we'll have cake.

to me, number 5 makes the most sense. The dyson sphere itself is no threat to the AI. It has no ability of attacking. It can't even be destroyed (not counting the hybrid plot), it just sits there. It shouldn't make the AI go all "oh noes, a dyson sphere just sitting there doing nothing, let's reinforce''. But the gatlings... they have firepower, a lot. Makes sense to reinforce when they are present.
Plus this way you can make yet another tactical decision: do I want to be able to view what's going on at the dyson planet, but put all adjacent worlds on alert? Or do I want no enemy reinforcements there, but be blind?
This reminds me GUDare, just get a scout in there if you still want a part of the reinforces to go there. they just won't be reinforced from the start of the game now (if it gets fixed like this :P)

If you want a planet and its neighbors to be on alert, just sneak about 50 cloaked non-scouts onto the planet and stick them outside the grav well... expense?  ship caps?  Bah ;)

Anyway, yea, dyson gatlings (except for ai-ally ones) would still alert.

well, it's been more than a month since my last update, but I started playing Dwarf Fortress for the first time... so yeah :P
I tried it once more, but the threat the dyson sphere causes builds up faster than I can rebuild my fleet. I probably would have been able to defend for a couple more hours, but I wouldn't be able to make much progress. So I give this one up :D I know when I'm beaten.
end time is 9 hours and 45 minutes. AIP is 89.
I won't give up that easily though. I WILL eventually beat this. Gonna make a new thread with attempt #2

I believe it was you who got me interested in DF, keith :P Weren't you the one who posted a link to the story of Boatmurdered somewhere a while ago? Well, I read the entire story and I got curious lol. Getting used to the whole ASCII thing was easier than I thought.

and of course I'll try again. And again and again and again. I wouldn't be surprised to see "Keith's Challenge Attempt #53" at some point :D

well, Boatmurdered was in ASCII and so is the entire wiki. Figured I'd learn the game faster if I would just use ASCII myself, even though it's graphically less appealing.

I only have the problem of ASCII being physically straining for the eyes. I have a 1920x1080 resolution and everything is positively TIIIIIIINY in ASCII, so I'd rather use a tileset than get blistering headaches after an hour :/ Otherwise I'd probably go hardcore too.

Why aren't you using font set with larger letters?

It's still ASCII but can be much larger and some of them are also a bit fancier.

ASCII master race reporting.
The most important change for me was switching to a square 12x12 font so that there are no geometric distortions.
That and removing the "[varied ground tiles]" that turn a nice clean "...." area into a ".,.,"
I remember even trying some dude's hand-written tileset. Looks absolutely hilarious but unplayable.

Once you uderstand the interface, especially learn to use "q" "k", understanding the meaning of specific tiles becomes quite trivial.
