Well i just lost my current game due to not being able to stop enemy ships pilling up on a buffer planet :( 3000 (2500) on carriers.  I didn't want to nuke cause it had a MKIV starship constructor on it.  Did a few raids with an armoured golum and botnet golum, which kinda worked but then I had to go and recover the 3rd shard. Ouch.  It turned out all the units in the carriers were mark V ships and those gravity guardian things which really slowed things down.  Lost about 6 planets and was only one planet away from my home world when a CPA rolled in, through 1 worm hole, 10000MKIV bombers.  Made my cry lol.

What kind of defence stop 10000MKIV bombers?

It doesnt send 10k bombers, just the first wave of 1k ships is actually bombers. What is in the carriers is again a mixed fleet.
Actually not really sure if that is intended but that is how it works in my games.

no really, I still had a few scouts left on planets and there was 10k bombers on it.  Kinda scary seeing the threat-o-meter sitting at 13K or something.

Either way, its still kinda hard to defend against...

Against that, you're probably going to need a Botnet or Hive golem (maybe a Cursed golem can make an appreciable dent), or suicide bomb a couple Martyrs into that.  Alternately, Mk3 EMP the planet and let your fleet go nuts.  If all that fails, nuke it from orbit.  50 AIP is a pretty small price to pay compared to 13k mk4 bombers.  13k mk4 bombers is something I certainly would never want to see.

On defense, set up a network of mk3 grav turrets plus a military mk3 command station (unless you already have Spire starships unlocked for the muniboost).  You're going to want to give yourself as much time to kill the bombers as quickly as possible.  If you've been saving up a cap of mercenary mk4 fighters, now would be the time to use them (Mercenary Etherjets and Beam Frigates as well if you have the resources).  A trio of mk2 Riot controls with Tazers may be able to do something, not sure, and if you have the time/resources (again, always an issue), see if you can set up all your lightning turrets (mk2 and mk3 included) on that wormhole to try to deal as much damage as possible while they're gravved.

Yeah, both my golums took a beating and the bot net got out with maybe 10% health after the first wave of border aggresion, unfortunatly the bombers took out several human settlements on the way towards my core systems and my AIP was +1000 :(  Never mind, new game, this time with Spire ships enabled :)

I think it's usually better to not capture the human settlements.  100 AIP is a huge amount for something that's really difficult to protect, and the resource boost is near inconsequential now with all the expansions to economy that players have gotten over time (55 of each resource used to be a lot, now it's not even 3 of each type of harvester at mk1, and it doesn't compare to mk3 econ stations).

Tru dat. Settlements, the little thingies in the home system, gravity drills...all ought to have their resources checked.

Grav Drills are amazing defensive locations independent of their resource production.  I don't think Grav Drills or Rebel Human Colonies need their resources checked, since they provide alternate uses that are very, very powerful.

Unless something comes in that ignores gravity...and suddenly, you're sitting in your own trap  ::)

Just fortify the planet with a mk3 military and plenty of turrets, a fortress or two, and you should do okay.
