I think X3 had a very concise tutorial for introducing you to the world, actually:

Asteroid.

At least, that was mine.  I think the more general message is "You Die."

I guess I had it easy because I played the original X Beyond The Frontier which is VASTLY simpler but pretty much everything from that game persisted into X3.

Also a game that takes a while to get into is Evochron, I died like a dozen time to badly done jumps (jumping into atmosphere, into asteroids, etc).

Yeah, while I like the idea of Evochron, I've been so fed up with trying to get into it that I think I'm done for good. I get X3 just enough that I want to keep trying to really get it.

Evochron isn't my cup of tea specifically for a lot of those reasons, but I can see why people love it: that's what they signed up for.  A lot of people are done with AI War for similar reasons of "this isn't something that's worth the time investment to me."  And that's cool, but that's just the nature of making niche products like any of the examples listed here.

Also, glad to hear this about the tutorial :) I just remember lots of poeple leaving games behind because they were too complicated ... Well, the best example I think is X3 ... Blah to that game ! Can't figure out anything except basic fighting.

Well, I'm doing a lot of work with the tutorial and the new player experience, I'm pretty sure I can do a better job than X3. :)

ROFLOL !!!

Well, personally I think you already did better than x3 as it is right now :)

In x they don't tell you anything at all ... You are in space... You're in a ship... There are stuff around you ! Good luck player ! Oh and if you look, there's a totally labyrinthic menu where you won't understand anything because it's way complicated and don't count on us to take time to explain even 1/10 of it ! Good luck !

Never played evochron, hesitated though but the graphism are stopping me !
I'm still a big free lancer fan though ! Which is by far, the best space sim I ever played to !
Sad they never expanded it with more stuff like building a station and so on like in x3 but with the simplicity of freelancer !

I wish I could take the X3 devs and force them to do what Valve does: Put a normal person down to play the game and have the devs watch but don't allow them to say anything. That's how Valve develops their intuitive gameplay. The X3 games play like they did this, but then changed everything that someone was able to figure out on their own to make it even less clear for players that came after.

Where can I apply enchants? I must have about three enchants now but I don't see any button or area I'm supposed to apply them....

Hit Z. :)

The intro mission tells you this, and the each time you pick up an enchant without having one applied it should also be telling you this.
