What am I missing regarding the underground cavern bosses?
« on: March 31, 2012, 07:12:21 pm »
I am still in Tier 1 on my first guy.  As soon as I get into the underground boss rooms, 1-3 black smoke bat looking creatures kill me in just a few hits.  Is this normal?  It is the only way to get to the underground veins that I need to get some level 2 spells.  What am I missing?

Personally I'd say prioritize acquiring upgrade stones and enchants over rushing to upgrade your spells, with a couple of health upgrades and some basic enchants, I think you'll find them a lot less threatening.

I say this because the, or at least my general tactic for fighting Shadow Bats is just running in a circle, they hit hard but they are pretty stupid as long as you can manage to jump over them when they come near you they aren't much of a problem.

As an incidental point assuming you have already died in the boss room don't even bother trying to go back, it's just asking for trouble, as you will have to fight a vengeful ghost as well as the Shadow Bats

It takes a while to adjust your tactics to fighting them. It's really important to dodge their attacks because I think they steal life from you with every attack. Also, you want to try get some distance between you and them so you can fire some spells, including Creeping Death, at them. If they can't draw life from you, they die pretty fast, especially from the bigger spells.

I have 100s of green upgrade stones, but havent tried using them yet.  The problem is that they are often in groups, with extra normal mobs, plus the uneven terrain that includes a vertical environment.  I will try the upgrade stones and see if that helps.  I also equippedthe light based spell, since that is what they are supposed to be weak to if i read them right.  As for my enchants, i just reached the one that speeds up spells by 40%.  I'm avoiding missions because i dont want to hit tier 2 if i cant even kill these tier one guys.

Each boss has it's weaknesses randomized. It's fairly unlikely that both bats are weak to light at the same time, possible but unlikely. You can check their weaknesses by pausing the game and moving your mouse over them. In any case, the trick with shadow bats is they have a monstrous attack, but not as much health as other bosses. If you can boost your health with upgrade stones so you can survive a hit or two, then the bats will typically fall fairly fast. Also as Terraziel has mentioned, if you've died in that chamber before, you might want to go to a different cave system or route as there will be a vengeful ghost in that room.

It's extremely handy having double or triple jump enchantments, this make them much easier to doge and kite them. Like other I suggest upgrading your character and getting as many enchantments as you can before verging into deep caverns. I discovered getting at least 1 of each slot of enchantments help greatly early on, and you will find more as you explore, best thing to do is search pyramids in early desert areas they usually contain a lot of enchantments. :)

Also, it's very possible that the balance on those enemies is off. I don't think it's been looked at in a while. That's definitely something we should look at soon.

The way I usually fight the shadow bats is to figure out a safe path around the room where I can keep up my speed and keep running around along it while shooting at them.

The important thing is to keep moving and not get caught on terrain or obstacles. As long as you can keep up the pace you can usually outrun them.

What I find really helps is to lock onto them with the tab key so that I can focus on running away rather than trying to aim at them.

That's quite possible. I don't think I've ever fought one of these without at least a double jump and some sort of beefed up health pool. I can't even remember a time when I didn't have at least ride the lightning even in the earliest betas. Going up against them with an un-upgraded character would probably be suicide. I suppose if the balance ends up staying this way you might need some more tutorial hints popping up the first time you drop into a cave that bosses can be dangerous without first acquiring some upgrades and enchants.

They got much tougher to fight when background ladders got removed from boss rooms.

Also I haven't seen bosses with random weaknesses, only random extra resistances. The only bosses with weaknesses are those that have weaknesses as part of their species attributes (e.g. Skelebots).

Also consider using auto-targeting to target the bats and concentrate on running away from them while throwing spells.

Once I got smooshed a few times I pretty much avoided these areas until I got a  good bank of enchants and enough upgrade stones to max my guy and keep several hundred in reserve for the next. There are also underground areas that sometimes spawn where you can get to gem veins without a boss room in the way.

I built up in the desert areas  running maze rooms for enchants and smaller building stashes for upgrade stones I did secret missions for materials, boss tower bosses are easier.  The world is infinite so pick the low hanging fruit to get stronger, if it's getting tough go somewhere else, you'll find the stuff

Once I got -damage taken, -cooldown and - mana  enchants,  a few upgraded spells and used some upgrade stones things were much easier.
