Warp Gate - Don't need to enter?
« on: April 14, 2012, 07:54:43 pm »
Hey guys, that was wierd.  Can you enter any warp gate that you've entered the room of?  If so, that's AWESOME.  If not, interesting bug.  I just started a new world and out of curiousity I tried to use the first warp gate from the second one before you drop down to the mines/spell crafter.  It was more than happy to send me there.

Is that a bug or a killer feature?

I've always seen it as a feature that you're able to use any warp gates in any rooms you've visited, regardless of if you've stood in front of them or not. And frankly, I prefer it that way; otherwise, there'd be cases where you found the gate but didn't stand in the right spot, so it wasn't made active.

That's a feature -- you only have to go into the warp gate to use them going out of them (and it provides safety in the meantime as you choose your destination).  But at the destination end you have no reason to go into the warp gate.

Coming up soonish, you won't even have to go into it at the source either, although if you want to duck inside for safety you still will be able to.  I'll have to make that more clear also.

I take back what I said about 'having to enter warp gates' then being annoying before.  I thought you had to pop in/out of each one to 'activate' them.  This makes a lot more sense and works great.  Thanks. :)

Cool, sounds good.  Either way the ability to stand in front of them and use them from the source is still handy, so there's no reason for us not to put it in.  But yeah, I was perplexed why it was seen as such a big deal before; having to go into each warp gate and then climb out manually just to "register" them would have been an abysmally annoying waste of player time.

Sometimes we tread that line pretty narrowly ;)

Another question about warp gates, is there a way to warp from the home settlement to a warp gate in another region, or do you have to leave settlement, travel, enter, find a local warp gate in that region, and then warp to where you want to go?  Wondering if I missed another tombstone somewhere explaining that.

Warp gates are intra-region only, but there is always a warp gate on the chunk nearest to the world map in any given region.  So you can't get between regions any way other than the world map.  That's unlikely to ever change for both technical and thematic reasons, but not sure if you were suggesting that or just asking. ;)

Nope, just asking.  As you mentioned, some folks can't read and I'm not innocent of missing what's directly in front of my face when staring at the shiny thing in the corner... :)  Thanks for the info.

Neither am I innocent of that, when you get down to it.  If there's one universal human condition, it's that we're great at staring right through stuff that is in front of us.  How many times I've been looking for keys that were in my hand, etc, etc. ;)

Quick question about warp gates: Are they "static", in the sense that the room they lead to will always be around, or are they more like missions in that they vanish after a while? Thinking about using the warp gate in my settlement as a landfill for my old enchantments...

Warp gates are static -- the only thing that are "instances" are the inside of missions.
