Valley 2: The backdrops need a lot more detail
« on: December 21, 2012, 10:56:35 pm »
After playing the beta today and playing through the various environments I noticed that the backdrops have very little to them.

They should have much more detail and vibrancy in my opinion. The grasslands and groves feel very very bleak. A good example I think for backdrops have been Terraria and, the sequel they are working on, Starbound. The background and more of the entire game feels more alive and dynamic.

Arcen if you can, please try and remake the backdrops and some other textures for the landscape.

A number of the backdrops are still in a beta state. :)

The only thing that bugs me on the backdrops is the lack of parallax when moving vertically. Horizontal is great, and looks fine, but the layers don't move at all when falling down a long drop, for example, and it just looks really weird and off.

That, and that one green background where the hills, or whatever they are, look like giant fleshy blobs. That's just weird.

Unrelated note: Starbound's not a sequel to Terraria. Tiy's making his own game after splitting off from Terraria and the other devs of that game.

It certainly looks a lot like one though.

That's because Tiy does the art.

I think the backgrounds are already looking quite nice. I prefer the minimal look. If it gets too busy it'll be distracting.

Yeah my biggest problem with the first game probably was that the backgrounds just looked too shiny. When they're too shiny, you can't see things that are about to hit you. There was like, a graphic thing called A Valley With More Depth, and it looked like you could actually do things like see bats coming in that graphic mod.

Yep, please don't go the way of AVWW with too detailed and contrast-rich backdrops. The background should be there for prettiness, not prevent you from seeing the actual game ;) But so far I've only come across one background that killed my eyes and that was an indoors, asian inspired yellow thing. That made it hard to distinguish foreground objects. But I forgot to take a screenie. Oops.

Too blinded by the background to take a screenie?  ;)

Black background with lamps and gold highlights everywhere? That one is a contrast nightmare, especially for bats...

Are you talking about the black and gold one with all the gears? I kind of dislike it as well (It's very visually distracting), but fortunately, it's not too common.
