Throw rock is overpowered?
« on: October 20, 2011, 10:19:09 pm »
I don't know about everyone else, but I use the throw rock spell for pretty much all of my mook-slaying needs.  It has a big collision box, and it does a ton of damage for a negligible cost.  Yes, it has a short range, but I rarely come across enemies that I can't just rush at and smash flat with a giant boulder.

Any thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Well, elemental damage will help with this to SOME degree... But it's interesting, a lo of players were talking about how it was not a favorite spell, I thought.

I used to use it all the time until I found out how to craft spell gems.  The mp cost increase it got a while ago got me to look at other options but I still think its great for all of the reasons Gallant Dragon stated. I might have to break it out again as it was quite versatile.

I just go with the Throw Meteor variant for all the same reasons, plus its easier to throw around and I like the bigger damage it outputs.  I'm not a player who cares very much about mana efficiency

I find myself dualing Fireball and Energy Pulse most of the time. Fireball for few targets, and both for more targets/DPS. Like the rock spells, Energy Pulse has the advantage of passing through enemies.

If you have a lot of land-based rampaging monsters, throw rock followed by energy pulse is your best friend.

I use Ball lighting on Left click, and Energy Pulse on right, with mana pots on middle click in case I don't want to wait longer after an auto-regen. It's very easy to swap between the two spells rapidly and hit weak spots for massive damage.

It's a bit heavy on mana useage, but that's why stash rooms exist!

I find that if you do even minimal exploration, mana is rarely an issue. I'm packed with 24 Mana Pot I, and roughly 10 or so Mana Pot II, while health pots are quite the more rare. Besides, if you are working your way through a nearby evil outpost or RC-tower, it's easy to just warp to the entrance, exit, visit the settlement, Ilari-heal, walk back and warp to the room you were in. Takes a bit more time, but saves a pot, if you're not pressed for time.

Pretty please tell me what are you doing to get more mana then health potions. After some exploring of stashes in new game I ended up with around 100 healing pots.. and whole 26 mana ones.

Collect Sapphire dust from sapphire viens, each unit of dust (2 per vein) gives 20 mana scrolls which I think are equivilent to mana potions of the same tier.  Spleunking in the Ice age (not the thaw) is best to find sapphire, but you will find a little opal too if memory serves.  Typically you might find 3 - 5 viens giving you 60 - 100+ Mana Scrolls in a single cave section.

I used it at the start but stopped using it mostly because I don't think the trajectory really suits my battle style.

I've been mostly using Energy Pulse and Ice Cross.

I dunno why, but it kinda disturbs me that it does even more damage than energy pulse for far less mana.

I like the spell but with the recent price hike it's no longer my go-to option for mook slaying. My primary spells are ice cross, death touch and ball lightning (which seems to be at the sweet spot for getting a lot of 1 hit kills without costing more mana than necessary).

Energy pulse has far more range than the rock, that's a huge advantage.

I only use it for boss fights after the mana cost increase.

Ball Lightning and Energy Pulse for most anything else.

Its best feature is the satisfying sound of killing an enemy with a brick to the face.
