The game DOES get hard.
« on: September 28, 2011, 05:20:54 pm »
Up until recently, I thought all bosses were like those easy peasy civilization level 1-2 giant minibosses and regular microbosses. Menacing, fast, powerful, but in the end, way too easy to take down. Then I had a sort of different experience.

First of all, I challenged a few Tower bosses. The first few were gigantic skeletons, not too hard. Then I got to some sort of giant amoeba with ridiculous amounts of HP that just camped in a corner I couldn't reach (becoming a bat and flying up to it wasn't effective because of the bat attacking nerf, and I couldn't get my Energy Pulse exactly where it was since I couldn't really see it that high up). By the time I thought to build platforms up to it I was already dead.

Then I got to Civ Level 3 and saw a hidden dragon boss on the map. Sure enough, I crossed 4 monotonous snowfields and there it was. Only problem... it was in a small hidey-hole under the surface of the area, filled with a bunch of other regular enemies. I quickly learned what was annoying about the dragons was that they would churn out ludicrous amounts of dragon-fire, which basically filled up the hidey-hole, turning any attempt to engage it into a Touhou game with a hitbox that's a little too large. I learned that the best way to fight that was to stay at the entrance of the pit and shoot, but again, by the time I figured that out completely, I was dead.

This game is nuts. I'm actually playing on regular difficulty, too. Can't imagine playing on hardest.

Recent update made the game harder. Mainly because all mobs are faster now - increase is quite significant for mobs of your level.

Amoeba bosses seem to be quite random. Remember to carry platforms and build yourself some steps to fight them. They should be modified probably a bit since now best way to fight them is to actually don't see them so that it's easier to dodge shots.

As for dragon and it's shot - I recommend spells like creeping death or the water one that pass through enemies and damage them.

The game is ridiculously hard at level 24, time to scout out some potions!

It can always get hard... actually I experienced a nasty confrontation against the bats bosses, but got owned because of the increased speed, and due to the narrow area of the cavern they were.... went back for revenge, but it got HARDER because of the vengeful ghost....

I honestly feel like that pink cloud of death they release have a long duration, it could be a little less, because for the "slow speed" they have, they release way too much trail, making it almost impossible to survive in a closed area with them.

And yeah, the dragon breath is nasty, but once you get the hang of the "launch rock" spell, it's less bothering.... if they don't spit it out on your face, that is. And even if they don't, it can be quite irritating dodging those flame things.

Chris, please, if you ever make a healthy dragon (flying and stuff), give us some "flak" spell ;D

I personally use the big pink blob spell to kill off their flames, it goes just slow enough and takes up just enough space that it can usually kill off all the flames in one shot.  Meteor does work very well though, it's just unreliable if you ever get them in an enclosed space.

The interesting thing is, the difficulty can really jump up and down based on what the RNG is up to.

Those huge skele-bot bosses, by themselves, are pretty easy, so long as you take care to avoid their projectiles and not crash into the boss itself.

....but get one in a rather cramped boss room that's ALSO filled with those aggravating Dwarfs, particularly if the area is a level or two above you, and.... yeah.  THEN it's a very, very different story.   I've had to make hasty retreats from those, a couple of times.

Another thing is you don't want to die in a boss room. You can get enough vengeful ghosts there to basically make it worth not coming back to unless you're a few levels higher than when you died. I have 2 vengeful ghosts in previously mentioned dragon boss room. I'm not going back there.

I've experienced a giant skellie in a very cramped corridor. The the about the giant skeletons is you can basically outsmart them, even if they do move fast, because they move back and forth in a straight line. Especially in boss towers.

I completely agree regarding the dwarfs and have a couple recommendations for the devs; usually when you are hit by a fireball while in air you get propelled further up into the air.  That makes sense and works very well within the game with the exception of boss fights against the big skelly.  The main way to dodge the fire is to jump around and if the dwarfs are popping you up and causing you to lose control the game starts feeling a little cheap especially because (suggestion number 2) the baddies respawn far too quickly for there to be any sense in killing them.  This works perfectly in every situation but a boss fight.  The dwarfs will keep bouncing you in the air if there's two or more (there's usually more :( ) making it impossible to dodge the flame from the big skelly-robo, perhaps making a set number of creeps within a boss fight?  Maybe a counter up top that shows how many you have left to kill?  Or even pack a room full of them!  But give us a chance to clear the room in order to properly handle a boss.  I know we have the option of destroying the spawners now but this is a pretty unrealistic goal given how hectic the boss battles are.

I completely agree regarding the ghosts, perhaps limiting the number per room and have the most recent ghost replace any other?  Also I've never noticed any equipment lost after death, is it just not implemented yet? (not complaining  ;D)

Crazy idea!  If you guys were to limit the ghost per room ratio send any extras to the settlement they hail from!  That will teach us to be more careful :)

If you die four times, anywhere on the world, the four ghosts band together and come for your town already.  You'll have to take them out as a group, but they'll be like any other roaming monster rather than in the room you were dying in there before.  :)

If you think bosses are hard now... Try the overlord, if you haven't already. In my case, it was a 1.2m health giant Skelebot. With plenty of Skelebot Dwarves. Icky.

Yeah, ultimately the overlords will be unique monsters you don't see anywhere else.  But as it stands they're incredibly buffed minibosses, heh.

Oh yeah, the overlord was rough, I was pretty over-leveled thankfully but it still took a lot of potions and probably ten minutes

Seen as I'm just about to throw my pointed sticks and fresh fruit at the local Overlord, what happens if I succeed at this stage? (PM if too spoilery for public domain).  Only been able to find 1 lt tower thus far, although that was pretty fun :)
