[Suggestion] Hotkey sets Spell as primary
« on: May 01, 2012, 01:13:50 pm »
I would rather like to see a system where you can select a spell as primary for the mouse button when you press its number on the Keyboard.
Basically like Terraria.

And how would that impact mouse buttons 2-x?  For instance, most mice have three mouse buttons and some (like mine) have upwards of 5.

Not having played Terraria, I'm legitimately asking.

numbers assign to mouse one [shift state]+ number assign to mouse 2, mouse 3 - x assign as normal hot keys to spell slots out side of 0-9 or i guess in side, but once you got used to the system I don't think you would wast them on those.

Or leaving it as it is now and just let mouse 1 be affected by pressing a number. Could be introduced as an option, so everyone can have their own style.

There's pros and cons to both types of configurations. If you have a lot of tools or spells that you need to select and then use repeatedly like in terraria, the terraria system works better, especially if you consider that the average user only has 2 or 3 buttons on their mouse.

If you have a large number of one-off spells or toggle spells that you cast a lot, the WoW-like hotkey system that AVWW uses is better.

If players had to use 4 or 5 direct-fire spells in combat then the terraria system would be a clear winner. As it is now, you can get away with just two spells, so it's fine as is.

If we had a mode where you could hit (for instance) the hotkey for slot 5 and then have that switch slot 5 and slot 1, would that do it?  That would give you pretty extreme flexibility.  I don't think I'd make that the default, but having that as an option could certainly make some people more comfortable, it sounds like.

That sounds like a good way duplicate the system

Would not that make all the slot mixed up after a bit of use? I mean If you have Action 1 in slot 1 Action 2 in slot 2 and Action 5 in slot 5. You hit 5 and action 1 and 5 get swapped so far so good. Now you hit 2 and action 5 and 2 got swapped. You now want action 5 again, but this time you need to hit 2 and not 5 because action 5 ended up in slot 2 by now. I can see how this can be confusing. Or did I misunderstand what you are proposing?

Or having a total Terraria mode, where mouse button 2-X are not used but you press the hotkey for the action you want on mouse 1.

I would suggest making spell wheels that you can cycle for primary and secondary. A number key could bring a spell to the forefront, but the wheels offer great flexibility for both slots.

It may be worth noting that the left hand configuration uses the 10 key and has 0-9 abilities mapped onto the mouse and 10 key; your hand never has to leave the 10 key for combat. Do people use more than 10 spells with any degree of regularity?

Duplicate it on 1 instead of switching.

I've registered an account here just to say that the current keybinding system is why I can only use 3 spells.

I'm dexterous enough to *press* a number 1-8 while platforming, but I can't *hold* a number higher than 3. And since spells 1-3 are already bound to my three mouse buttons, it buys me nothing.

It would be nice if the mouse buttons were spells 8-0 so that 1-3 would be different (total of 6 spells).
It would be even better if pressing a key put that spell  onto LMB (a total of about 10 spells)

But it can't be switching. It needs to be like selecting a gun in a FPS (Unreal Tournament or Team Fortress) so that (for example) 5 is *always* Ice Cross. If I have to hunt around to find where Ice Cross got swapped into, I'll just stick with my 3 spam spells.

For those having trouble, there's a way to move the active l-click/r-click across the bar to different positions, it's in your settings - Game Tab.  In View and Edit Controls, it's Switch L-Click Ability Slot to Next/Previous.  Bear with me.  Set one of these to some random key that you'll never use.  Backslash works for me.

Now, move your mouse clicking over to position 7 or so.  Leave your primaries in that position.

This leaves you 1,2,3 for direct access, gaining you those keys.  7/8 are your L/R clicks.  4,5,6 for some optional utility spells.

I've found this seems to be the best choice for access to a variety of things all at once, at least for me.   Hopefully that helps a little.

You can also edit the mouse buttons themselves to point at 7/8 directly if you go further in the list (on page 4/5) you can set "Use Mouse Ability" to be something different.  If you want to get really fancy you can hook up light ball to your left mouse as a utility and drop a few hundred of these as you fly through the landscape.  I don't recommend it as a permanent setup but for giggles it was quite amusing.

"It's Dark!  I'm blind!  Shoot someone!"
... and then we'll have cake.

It sounds like all we really need here is a mode where pressing a hotkey moves the current ability selection box to that slot (rather than scrolling it, you jump it somewhere).

And I've always used a control setup very similar to Wanderer's. ( My mouse controlling slot 6/7/8/9/0 (5 buttons!) 1/2/3 on their normal keys and 4/5 mapped to R/C.) But I've been meaning to change it up a bit, actually, so that my mouse is back on 1-5, 6-8 are mapped to 1-3 and 9 & 0 are R & C - as I think the game will now just display the mapped key next to the slot, rather than always 1-0 regardless?

I would suggest making spell wheels that you can cycle for primary and secondary. A number key could bring a spell to the forefront, but the wheels offer great flexibility for both slots.

I suggested something similar: http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=6252

Basically, the idea was to make columns independent from rows, in terms of scrolling between spells. I think this would crack the controls for me - nine static slots and one dynamic primary weapon.
