AVWW Beta 0.576 "Bug Bomb" Released!
« on: February 13, 2012, 12:56:58 pm »
Original: http://arcengames.blogspot.com/2012/02/avww-beta-0576-bug-bomb-released.html

This one is a collection of a few bugfixes, and one balance tweak.  We just wanted to go ahead and get these out ASAP.

More to come soon.  Enjoy!

This is a standard update that you can download through the in-game updater itself, if you already have 0.500 or later. When you launch the game, you'll see the notice of the update having been found if you're connected to the Internet at the time.  If you don't have 0.500 or later, you can download that here.

Have you considered making "Mana recharge rate" an actual separate stat for characters, to add to the variety?

Actually, we're going to cut it down from 4 stats to 3 -- the casting speed is going to become universal for all characters.  That sounds like a simpliciation, but it's actually not:

1. Both mana recharge rate and casting speed will be something that can be tweaked through enchants, just not through character base stats.

2. The remaining three stats (toughness, mana, and magical prowess) all have about the same scale of importance, and will thus be able to vary more widely.  Also, we're going to be expanding the vitality stone concept a bit, so that you can upgrade any of these three stats rather than just adding to health.  More on this later today, but by dropping the core stats to 3 it actually lets us make the player decision space a lot more complex without feeling too much more complex on the surface.

Quite excited about what this will add for character customization. :)

That sounds pretty good actually.

Perhaps makes this issue even more salient too: http://www.arcengames.com/mantisbt/view.php?id=5727 (shameless plug).  :)

The game is now able to scale monsters to tiers 6-10, when players venture far enough underground. The overall continent tier will never go above 5, and ditto for the player spells and such, so this constitutes a rather extreme difficulty curve if you wish to get 11 tiers deep underground -- something we figure that the harder-core players might find to be an amusing ultra-challenge.

I was thinking: as a reward for doing this, perhaps underground caves 6-10 could generate enchant jars which give you more enchant points than those of lower tiers?

Or just a greater density of resources, perhaps?

There definitely needs to be some sort of reward, but I'm not sure yet what to do with that.  To some extent we don't want people feeling like they HAVE to do those areas to get the best stuff, so it's a bit delicate.  For now I'm going to leave it as "completing these are their own reward," but there might be some non-gameplay-affecting visual-only bragging-rights type of unlocks based on getting down in there.

I'd rather see some sort of enchantment-civ-tier relationship where the quality of the enchantments you get depends on the civ level/enemy tier. I like the idea of having to delve into the ninth circle of hell to get the greatest rewards. A cosmetic reward would be kinda lame, only one step above flashing "achievement unlocked". Maybe make it something really odd or super specialized so it's not strictly better than regularly available stuff but still alters the gameplay.

Hell, maybe hide tier 6-10 spell scrolls down there. And maybe a race of underground-dwelling NPCs.

The trouble with doing stuff that is gameplay-affecting, is that it rewards great players by giving them even more awesome tools.  Which breaks the rest of the game for them, because not only did they have to go through the 9th circle of hell to get the stuff, but now anything less than the 9th circle of hell is even easier based on the loot they brought back.  What we ought to be doing is letting the monsters from there loose elsewhere on the world to keep things interesting, heh. ;)

Not that there can't ever be meaningful rewards for doing that sort of thing, but we can just slap uber enchants down there and have it not break the rest of the game for players that get those enchants, unless we also do more stuff to alter the rest of the game.  Getting the ultimate weapon that kills the end boss in one or two hits is fun, but that also marks the end of that game.  With a world that's supposed to go on forever, that sort of end state is highly undesirable.

But a race of underground-dwelling NPCs is entirely what I mean by a cosmetic reward.  You've unlocked some new playable characters, and their stats are a bit different from other NPCs, and they look different and say different things, but they don't actually make the game easier to have around.   Cosmetic sounds too shallow, so perhaps cosmetic/thematic/story would be a better way to put it.  Non-player-avatar-power-buffing would be another way to put it.  Getting new and interesting things to do as a reward, even new spell options, is fine -- so long as those options don't let you overpower the rest of the game.

I would happily dive into the 9th circle of hell in order to unlock playable mole people.

Especially if it means that unlocking the mole people means that you get Balorgs on the surface world.

They dug too greedily, and too deep....
