Stuck on 2nd continent?
« on: May 07, 2012, 12:35:51 pm »
Hey everyone!

Now that I finally was able to dispose of the 1st continent's evil overlord I happily sailed on to the 2nd just to find myself somehow stuck. (Not the character is stuck but the continent's development itself)
How?

I'll try to explain:
At first I watched out for missions that would allow me to quickly upgrade my spells to tier 2 so I could easily advance the continent's tier without regretting it sooner or later. But those missions' rewards weren't what I needed.
So my second approach was to look for guardian powers to upgrade (or rather establish) my settlement. So I got myself several powers to create buildings. Only to find that my residents' skill levels are still too low to execute/use those powers. -.-
As I'm a clever person I came to the conclusion that I'd probably first need a residential and storage tower. Where to find that? Right - it's there as a reward for a mission about 10 fields deep into the windstorm. (Where I take about 16 damage/s)
Solution: Build a windshelter. Wait. No. That would require higher skill levels.

That's my current situation. In my settlement there are 3 residents (Aquaurgist, Stonebinder, Apothekineticist) and 0 buildings. The resulting skill levels are all at 1 and the available power scrolls require at least 2 (Stonebinder Tri-Tower) or 3 (Seek survivor, Summon Windshelter, other buildings...).

So, do you have any thoughts on how to resolve my dilemma? :)

The only thing I can say right now is that missions do expire and that as they expire, you will get new missions with new rewards. Unfortunately for you, since you just started this continent, that means you'll have to wait. While you are waiting, you can go searching in the region types that do carry the resources you want and look for secret missions.

You'll also want to look for a lumbermancer (required for the residential and storage tower), which means spelunking or exploring big buildings.

I do agree though that right now, the second continent is a bit... overwhelming, to say the least. Unless you get lucky with missions, it could be very hard to get started.

Been there, continet 4 was even worse then 2, had bad luck with professions

If you need an specific character (fast) you can:

- Go back to another continent to get it
- Suicide (specially characters with repeated profession), lava chunks recommended for that

If you find it that difficult in the storm you can always change difficulty ;)
I wonder if a shield would stop the constant damage, but I doubt you have enough -% mana used yet to make it viable? Don't really use shields myself either

Unfortunately, the "go back to another continent" option isn't always there any more, since you have to have a non-stormy port to enter a ship.

- Go back to another continent to get it

I don't understand how that would help with missing buildings ?

You could have gone back and cast the sunrise/nighttime spells, they advance the mission timer across all continents. There is a Mantis issue about the seeding of mission rewards taking into account their position in the wind.

You seem to lack the lumbermancer required to get the first building done. My apologies if I misunderstood, there's another interpretation above which is even more interesting ;)

There are two or three potential bottlenecks on later continents.

 - Getting unlucky with mission rewards for residential tower/profession buildings
   - Forces you to either wait for missions to expire or seek out secret missions
 - Not having the right profession NPC for lumbermancer and stonebinder buildings (one of them is required to build the other ones)
   - Forces you to search for a rescue mission

Currently when I get to a new continent I look for missions which give me residential tower and profession buildings. See if I'm missing any NPCs in town and try to get those.
Meanwhile I can still increase continent tier. I don't really need wind shelters until I get to tier 5 and want to deal with lieutenants and the overlord.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.

Your method did the trick. Sun- and moonstones were found quickly and the newly spawned missions had me end up with one only 2 fields deep into the windstorm (2.1 damage per tick at full health - quite ok) rewarding me with a residential and storage tower. :)
Now I only need that level 1 lumbermancer to get going.

EDIT: And the RNG asked me: "And you really think that's going to be simple? Think again, fool."
Of course I also needed granite. And guess who doesn't find any granite when needed...? Well, at least now I have a good stockpile of copper and crystal. :D

I had this exact same thing happen (as I'm betting alot of players do..... second continent just sorta giggles at you when you think you're gonna have a normal settlement!)

The secret missions ended up being what I did to get the buildings.   It seems that MOST surface areas have a very high chance of containing a secret mission, if you progress through them far enough, and the game sticks those buildings as rewards commonly if you dont have them yet.

I actually got stuck on the second continent because of the stupid Overlord.

He's in a really, really tiny room with nowhere to run and he does nothing but spam those player-seeking Fire Birds.  I swat them down with AoE, but there are literally 50 of them on the screen almost at all times and nowhere to run!

Any advice?  Because it's borderline unwinnable right now.  And yes, I'm at T5, all spells maxed, and good enchants.

Lots of people seem to be getting stuck on the tiny overlord room with those homing fire things. The best advice everyone seems to be getting is to use fire shield. It really seems to help.

Yep.   That's what allowed me to win in that exact situation.   It's nigh impossible otherwise.

Level 3 or higher fire shield, with a high-mana character, that's the way to deal with those fire seekers.

Though you cant just stand there and let them all smack into you or the shield will be overwhelmed.   I found that if you're on one side, and he fires those, you're best off crossing to the other side by going over his head (I placed alot of platforms for this).

While doing this, fire off some attacks at them;  Energy Slice is the best for this, or Tidal Pulse if you've managed to upgrade that one (bloody Sea Essence!)

That fire shield is great for dealing with dragons anyway, so it's good to have, as is Energy Slice (which is also incredible at stomping the giant green amoebas, and also good at fairy swatting).

I beat the stupid thing, finally.  It took way more tries than it should have.  I guess the boss has this habit of casting Meteor Storm when he's at low health.  Really lame.

Anyway, what I ended up doing was getting one of those 29 HP, crazy-high-attack characters and just dodging everything.  I learned to not even try killing those birds.  When he launches them, I just run until they dissipate.

Oddly enough, fighting stupid (Standing in front of him and jumping/shooting) works better than trying to fight smart (Using platforms/terrain/ect) because whenever you do anything but stand in front of him, he'll start spamming those birds.

I forgot to mention two things that probably made this fight a lot harder than it should've been:
-This fight is in the Lava Flats.  So no Double Jumps...
-I had a Risktaker enchant on without realizing it.  Double damage isn't fun.
