So, after a number of mantis reports that stem from this, and from some comments here on the forums, I'm thinking that it might be wise for the ilari to provide invulnerability from the cold in the chunks that they are in.  Thus characters in a wind shelter node, settlement node, or underground neutral ilari cavern, would never have to worry about temperature.  That way:

1. The various NPCs from other time periods that you invite to your settlement would retain their normal look and not don snowsuits.

2. Players who choose a player character without cold resistance won't die while trying to figure out what is going on.  If they leave the starting chunk and go into a new ice age area, then start taking damage, they can figure out what's going and run away before they die, then craft a snowsuit.

3. There will be no way to functionally get killed through attrition while in the strategic map, citybuilding interface, crafting screens, etc, because those only occur in the presence of ilari.

The downside?  Inevitable comments about people running around in shorts in the snow.  That's the only one I can think of, and it seems slight compared to the rest.

Thoughts?

I think this is a great idea, I was thinking it would be annoying to have to wait until I find a settlement that isn't ice-age to help save people from non-ice-age regions.

If anyone complains about people in shorts running around in the snow, just put in art for a space heater connected to an orange extension cord and plugged in to the back of the guardian stone.

I am going to miss having snowsuit wearing npcs but this does seem like a good change.

1 - I have gone sledding in shorts and no shirt. The cold damage is not so bad.

2 - Ilari protection is a good move. First, it shows more of a physical protection aspect. The more of this the better, I think, since part of the story is that the Ilari are protecting people. It would be unfortunate if that protection did not extend to frostbite. Secondly, I think it opens up player willingness to choose a broader range of characters. No longer will I think, "meh, that guy doesn't even have a snow suit" and then choose one that does.

I'm in favor!

I'm all for this idea! I'm not overly fond of those snowsuits...except when they're keeping me alive.  :P

I don't think it would be that odd to see them in shorts walking in the snow, obviously the illari stones are special.

Although maybe they could don warm clothes like a fleece/winter jacket/gloves. That would be more work but would be a good middle ground between shorts and a snowsuit.

I support this though in it's current form.

Having no particular issues with the idea i would suggest two things.

Firstly, people under protection should have some sort of particle effect making it obvious they are.

Secondly, you should probably do a notification when it's the case, so that people know they have to equip the character with a snowsuit

That would be a good idea. At the very least a little corner notification to the effect of "The presence of an Ilari Guardian Stone is providing protection from the elements," would probably go a long way towards stifling shorts-in-snow complaints.
