Oh, and one more question: Why haven't the monsters simply trampled all over the settlements already? We already know they can (or at least could; are there roaming monsters any longer?), so what's keeping them from having a snack?

Why is the water acidic anyway? How come we can breath underwater?

Will there ever be purfified water you can swim in without taking damage?

Another good one.  I added that to the mystery about the wind, and made that more generalized about the environment overall.

I know it's an in-game thing, but to add to the magic section, why does no one use regular weapons? Is magic universally more powerful?

Answer: it doesn't.  That was placeholder, and was removed back in nov or dec. :)

Related to #1 - what's up with the moon?  We don't necessarily need details on this one, just some idea that it hasn't always looked like that.
Also regarding the moon, the bottom half is partially transparent... is that part of the lore?

Why not take the Final Fantasy XIII approach? Just have the in-game dialog and (non-mechanics related tutorial) pop-ups reference an overwhelming amounts of terminology and cultural ideas that the player has no idea about, and they make no attempt to explain or show to help someone who doesn't know these concepts. If you want the relevant background and glossary, you gotta sit down and read like dozens of pages of stuff buried in the menu just to understand what in the world your main characters are talking about.  :P



Sigh...SquareEnix, there are ways to weave enough exposition for the player to understand what the frap is going on without breaking immersion. Sure it can be tricky, especially if you are constructing a setting with very different physical and cultural attributes than our own, but other stories have done it before.

I haven't really seen a lot other rpg's that went entirely "off-record" and have no cultural relations at all. This however, is why I got myself Kingdoms of Armur, as it is nearly a 100% unique fantasy world with only some very old Celtic influences (Sidhe, Summer/Winter court, Fae.)

If you play the Demo there you can ask any NPC about the background, not everyone has the whole story but some NPC's know this and that, and via their different replies and opinions you can build up a huge backstory catalog (not to mention that there is books, and lore stones).

Heh.. this sounds like an AD for that game.. guess i just wanted to say that deep complex lore CAN be exposited in dialog easily if you make it a "what do you know" question, not everyone knows a lot of history but that farmer that for generations was harassed by magic creatures has interesting "lore" on them. The way Square Enix does lore is TERRIBLE, not to mention that Square Enix does not even understand how to do a game-world without literally making half the world static-1-reply-npc's
