So I'm Trapped...
« on: March 14, 2012, 03:52:52 am »
I slipped into a crack in a wall (a one-box space) by a combination of ducking and moving... and there's no way to get out. I found a door in the gap which doesn't connect to any other doors and I can't get out the way I came in.

Is this the part where I kill my character and chalk it up to 'hey, don't go there next time?'

If you don't have shrink (or is it miniaturize?), then possibly yes. It sucks losing whatever investments you've made regarding upgrade stones, but it's a learning experience.

Another possibility would be and Elusion Scroll, but those are rare.

This is also why the duck slide is not enabled by default. If you got an enchant that lets you do it, it's assumed that you're willing to take on the risk.

There are also Transmogrify Into Bat scrolls which are considerably less rare that you can keep handy for situations such as these; but yeah, what the others said beyond that.

I'm wondering, are these 1 block high spaces proving worthwhile at all? Before when you could double tap down to miniaturize, they were at least not annoying. But since whatever is past them might be nothing more than just some enemies or a door to an empty room or whatever, their existence seems rather pointless. And although it may sound incredibly lazy of me, fiddling with my inventory to find miniature and cast it on both sides of these passageways just seems pointless, given the above. If they could be guaranteed to have something useful behind them, maybe it would be more interesting. As is they are at best just vaguely annoying time wasters if you have the tools to deal with them, or at worst new player traps exactly like what happened here.

I know the reasoning behind adding them was to have something similar to the traditional platformer 'get upgrade, unlock new areas' trope. But in traditional platformers, without fail, those new areas also contain something that you want to get. You don't unlock new areas only to find that they are just the same as the old areas, but with an arbitrary entrance requirement. For something similar in AVWW, there would need to be a whole section made up of tiny cracks that you had to stay in mini for the whole time, while fighting against rats and giant bugs or something, and containing some unique items.

These one block high areas typically only are in destroyed rooms, and/or they are simply a trap to kill you.  They are there for thematic reasons and as a way to kill you if you're unwary, and that's pretty much it.  They are mostly not about gating off any content, as almost never is there content behind them.

Storm Fist is another way to get out of these things.  Since this has come up a few times, I added it to the FAQ in the wiki: http://arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=AVWW_-_I_Wedged_Myself_Into_An_Hole_And_Now_Am_Stuck_--_What_Do_I_Do%3F

I meant the one block high areas in basements/attics, not destroyed rooms.

Those were removed a couple of versions ago, to my recollection.

I'm... pretty sure they were still there in .904. But when the developer says something like that my memory suddenly looks very suspect. I'll have to go poke around later...

My memory is suspect, too; there have been a lot of changes.  But I'm pretty sure those were largely if not completely removed from attics and basements.

They don't happen as crawlspaces but I suppose they are the result of the random generator. They're always a floor ending and a ceiling beginning right after it with a 1 tile gap between the higher floor and the lower ceiling. So a tile-wise check would conclude that the gap is larger but if you are trying to move from one column of tiles to the other there's only one row of them that's connected.

As it turned out there was a door on the other side of the 1 gap with some bonuses... it just didn't go anywhere afterwards. Btw I have no idea what a duck slide is, I sort of jimmied my way through with a combination of ducking and moving.

Yeah I assume that's a bug. I've noticed that you can do that but I forgot to bug report it. If you keep pushing towards the wall and ducking over and over you will slowly wedge your way through gaps.
