Small chests - what is in them?

Sometimes I come across small chests, and when I open them, small colored orbs come out and are absorbed by me.  I haven't noticed any effect from them - What are these doing?  Is there ever anything else in the chests besides these?

Oh, OK!  That's cool.  Thanks.  I had thought they were supposed to be healing or something.   I don't recall seeing any message saying I got some of them - maybe it's worth adding a message like when you pick them up from the ground?

I thought that it did, but perhaps not.  Would be a good one for mantis if it's definitely not.  Thanks!

If these are the chests that sometimes spawn in basement areas, they always contain health orbs (unless that's changed very recently). The same things you get from monster kills. I'm not really sure why they're in basements, or why they only ever spawn in basements. But they can be useful from time to time.

How do you open chests I didn't realise this was possible? Also if conciousness shards are the remains of the people who didn't survive the cataclysm how did they end up in chests?

Destroy them.  It looks like shards come out, but nothing is labelled in the top right message box.
